Summary How were early medieval people connected to each other and to the wider world? In this collection, archaeologists and historians working in very different areas of early medieval Europe explore diverse evidence - from landscape and burial archaeology to charters and chronicles - to discuss the relationships that constituted neighbourhoods and the roles these played in the processes of state formation that can be observed in the peripheries of the Frankish world. What these case-studies teach us, the contributors argue, is that polities are formed not through the exclusive operation of either top-down or bottom-up agencies, but from the interplay between them. By exploring the ways in which local knowledge, social ties, and understandings of landscape interacted with higher-level authorities and institutions, we can gain real insights into the nature of early medieval power and people's experiences of it. Marking the culmination of a collective effort that has spanned over a decade and three funded projects, this volume brings together case-studies from Spain, Italy, England, northern Frankia, Norway, and Iceland to offer a comparative view of polities and neighbourhoods in early medieval Europe. Summary This book fills a significant gap in the literature on eighteenth-century art in Britain. Although immigrant Italian artists played a crucial role in the development of Britain's expanding art world over the course of that century, they have been largely overlooked in books on both British and Italian art. When mentioned in works on eighteenth-century British art, Italian artists are regarded as bit players who were tangential to the art world. Ingenious Italians seeks to correct this view, demonstrating the critical role played by immigrants who brought their skills and talents to a new country. In Britain, they established networks of Italian and British colleagues, cultivated new patrons and created innovative works for a growing market. In doing so, they influenced the development of art in British society. This little-explored facet of art history in Britain presents readers with a new perspective from which to consider the art of the era, highlighting the important work contributed by Italian artists in Britain. The book also contains an appendix of biographical information on the Italian artists working in Britain throughout the eighteenth century. "La Révolution démographique d'Adolphe Landry, que l'Institut national d'études démographiques réédite aujourd'hui, a paru en 1934. Bien des événements se sont produits depuis lors, qui sembleraient devoir reléguer ce livre et les craintes qu'il exprime dans un lointain passé. En dehors des guerres et des bouleversements politiques, aucun dépeuplement en effet, annonciateur de décadence, ne s'est manifesté nulle part. Au contraire, loin de diminuer, la population des pays d'Europe occidentale a continué de s'accroître. La population humaine, dans son ensemble, et durant ce demi-siècle, a plus que doublé. Dans le même temps la démographie s'est affirmée comme science autonome, et ses progrès ont été remarquables. Ce livre n'en mérite pas moins d'être repris et médité à nouveau. En premier lieu, il constitue un maillon important dans l'histoire de la science et de la pensée en matière de population. En outre, l'évolution démographique passée y est décrite en toute clarté et il en fournit une explication qui reste décisive. Enfin, l'histoire étant fertile en retournements, la situation présente de l'Europe, et de la France, notamment, à laquelle il s'intéresse particulièrement, rejoint à bien des égards celle de l'entre-deux guerres.
