Small round blind-stamp on lower margin title-page.From 1899 to 1900 the HMS "Siboga" explored the waters of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), were an enormous collection of both shallow water and deep water organisms was gathered.

Conçue et dirigée par le naturaliste Bory de Saint-Vincent, l'une des premières études biologiques modernes et systématiques du nord de l'Afrique fut entreprise par le gouvernement français au début des années 1840 et donna lieu à une série de publications scientifiques en plusieurs volumes, intitulée Exploration Scientifique de l'Algérie. Les volumes botaniques et zoologiques de cette importante expédition présentent un intérêt particulier, contenant de nombreuses descriptions d'espèces nouvelles pour la science. Hippolyte Pierre Lucas (1814-1899) était entomologiste au Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Paris ; il participa à l'expédition algérienne de fin 1839 à début 1842 et prépara les collections d'invertébrés en vue de leur publication en quatre volumes : un volume consacré aux crustacés, arachnides, myriapodes et hexapodes et deux volumes sur les insectes accompagné d’un Atlas.
