Textes en français, allemand et italien. Premier, sixième et septième fascicules de l'Histoire naturelle des plantes et insectes de Surinam comprenant les fac-similés de 6 planches de l'édition princeps de Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium de Maria Sibylla Merian paru en 1705 à Amsterdam. Les textes latins et français qui accompagnent les planches sont repris de l'édition parue chez Desnos, à Paris, en 1771. Les notices scientifiques modernes qui les complètent ont été rédigées par Adelaïde Storck, Françoise Noisy et Daniel Cherix. Les 3 portefeuilles sont complets de leurs planches. Beau.
Histoire générale des insectes de Surinam et de toute l’Europe.
1771 Original engraved hand-coloured plate number XXXIV, depicting a moth, its caterpillar and its pupa on ‘’Vigne d’Amérique’’, large folio (33.6 x 50.2 cm). Later (probably not contemporary), but very well executed, hand-colouring. The plate was of course drawn by Maria Sibylla Merian, but was engraved by Pieter Sluyter (1675-1715). I am also offering the text part of this book (see under Entomology General).This work was first published in 1705 in Latin and Dutch. This plate comes from the French translation (stated as 3rd edition). The plates to this French edition appear to have been purchased at auction by L.C. Desnos (the Paris publisher). Merian’s ‘’Surinaamsche Insecten’’ or in French ‘’Insectes de Surinam’’ is one of the most famous entomology books ever produced.
Over de voortteeling en wonderbaerlyke veranderingen der Surinaamsche insecten, waar in de Surinaamsche rupsen en wormen, met alle derzelver veranderingen, naar het leeven afgebeelt en beschreeven worden, zynde elk geplaatst op dezelfde gewassen, bloemen en vruchten, daar ze op gevonden zyn, beneffens de beschryving dier gewassen.
1730 Original engraved hand-coloured plate number 24, depicting three beetles (coleoptera) and two coleoptera larvae on a thistle with a yellow flower. Imperial folio (36 x 52.4 cm). Later (not contemporary), but very well executed, hand-colouring. The plate was of course drawn by Maria Sibylla Merian, but was engraved by Joseph Mulder (1658-1742).This beautiful plate comes of course from one of the most famous entomology books ever produced. At the time I am writing this, one complete copy of the 1730 edition is for sale for 180.000 euro.
