1857 viii, 334 p., 54 hand-coloured lithographed plates, later half calf over red boards. Original printed front cover bound in.Important early monograph on European Aphidae with beautiful hand-coloured illustrations and including many new species described by Koch. The work was edited by Herrich-Schaeffer, who stated, in the preface dated December 1853, that the work would be finished in ten issues with 60 plates, but it was completed in nine issues with 54 plates. Carl Ludwig Koch (born in 1778) died in the year it was published. The first and the last few plates are a bit foxed in the margins with some marginal foxing in the text as well. Book plate pasted in on front, boards detached, otherwise a good copy. Horn-Schenkling 12046; Nissen ZBI, 2248.

Edition originale et premier tirage de l'une des plus ancienne études sur les aphidiae. Dos passé de couleurs, bel état interieur, les planches sont trés fraiches. Exemplaire de la bibliothèque de Jean TIMON DAVID le célèbre entomologiste ( monogramme en queue et tampon sur la page de titre ).

Library stamps (Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, and their discard stamp, one erased old stamp and one erased ex libris, stamp of the Swiss zoologist René-Edouard Claparède (1832-1871) on title-page). Bound in is also a hand-coloured plate of Coleoptera species (Chrysobothris), presumably by mistake.The coloured plates depict Ticks (Ixodida) only!

The author, Franz Friedrich Kohl (1851-1924) worked on mammals too, but Hymenoptera were his speciality and this is his magnum opus. Published in the Museum's Annalen, with a small, unrelated paper in the rear of the second volume. Uncut. Old stamp on front wrappers and title pages, otherwise a very good clean set. Rare.
