1857 half-title (title-page missing), cclxxvi p., pls 1-11 & 13-15 (4 hand col.), loose in plain wrappers. Library stamp on half-title. Inserted loose are two original ink drawings made by one of the previous owners.Genera des Coléoptères d'Europe was published in 4 volumes. This is the very long (271 pages!) introduction of volume 1 with 14 (of 15 plates), of which 4 are beautifully hand-coloured. The 138 pages of descriptions and 52 pages of index and catalogues are missing as are the 43 coloured plates that go with the descriptions.

The back board gives some details on the publication of this important work. It was planned to be published in 86 installments with 3 plates each. Every month two installments should be published. Of course this was wishful thinking, it took 12 years to finish this work. In all 25 fine hand-coloured plates (depicting: Colydiides, Cucujides, Cryptophagides, Mycetophagides, Mycetoeides, Corlophides, Lathridiides, Dermestides, Byrrhides, Parnides, and some smaller groups).
