(1880)
London, Longmans, Green, Reader, and Dyer for the Zoological Society, 1880. Strong in-8, demi chagrin époque, titre et année au dos. Bon exemplaire Complete with 64 plates, including 44 hand-coloured plates, with illustrations by artists including J. Smit and John Gerrard Keulemans.
First edition, complete in four parts, of the 1880 volume of the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. The Proceedings constitute one of the most important serial publications for nineteenth-century zoology, bringing together scientific papers describing new and little-known species, observations on animal anatomy and distribution, and reports on specimens held in the Society's collections and Gardens. The annual volumes are particularly valuable for their extensive zoological iconography, accompanying descriptions of newly identified or otherwise remarkable species. The 1880 volume includes contributions by leading zoologists of the period and covers a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrates. It is especially important for the history of taxonomy and natural history, as many species were described and illustrated in the Proceedings for the first time. Ch-3A
