Erste Ausgabe vollständig in 4 Bden. Die meisten Aufsätze naturhistorischen Inhalts, jedoch auch Alpen-Reisen und Bergtouren werden genauestens beschrieben. So z. B. eine Reise v. H. C. Escher in den Alpen, über die Gemsjagd, die Landschaft Davos v. Von Salis oder ein Beitrag zur Naturgeschichte des Lämmergeiers. Im Jahre 1821 hat Steinmüller nochmals einen Versuch gestartet, mit der ‘Neuen Alpina’ sein Publikum zu begeistern. Im Verzeichnis v. Dreyer der Bibl. des deutschen Alpenklubs wird dieser Neuversuch aus dem Jahre 1821 mit der Notiz ‘Mehr nicht erschienen’ versehen, dies stimmt allerdings nicht. Im Jahre 1827 kam nämlich noch ein 2. Band dieser Neuen Alpina heraus, nachher war’s dann wohl endgültig aus für die ‘Alpina’. Die gefaltete Karte in Bd. 4 zeigt die sehr schöne grossformatige ‘Petrographische Karte von demjenigen Theil von Tyrol und Schwaben, welcher Berg-Commissair von Lupin im Sommer 1805 bereist hat’. Leider wurde die 2. Karte ‘eine im Sommer 1806 von Rösch trigonometrisch aufgenommene Karte des nördlichsten Teils des ‘Cantons Graubündten oder das Thal von St. Lucien Steig bis Chur’ nicht eingebunden. Vereinzelt etwas stockfleckig, jedoch insgesamt ein schönes Exemplar in einfachen Pappbden d. Zeit jedoch mit schöner Provenienz : Aus der Bibliothek des Geologen Bernhard Studer (1794-1887) sowie von dessen Neffen, des Anatomen Theophil Studer. Summary Do animals other than humans have consciousness? Do they knowingly feel and think, rather than simply respond to stimuli? Can they be said to have their own subjectivity? These questions, which are still debated today, arose forcefully in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when empirical approaches to defining and studying the natural world were coming to the fore. Philosophers, physicians and moralists debated the question of whether the immaterial ?soul?--which in the early modern era encompassed all forms of thought and subjective experience?belonged to the human mind alone, or whether it could also exist in the material bodies of nonhuman animals. This book argues that early modern visual art offers uniquely probing and nuanced demonstrations of animal consciousness and agency. The questions that impelled the early modern debates over animal soul are used as a guide to examine a range of works produced in different media by artists in Germany, the Netherlands, northern Italy, and France. Manipulating the matter of their respective mediums, artists emphasized animals' substantial existence, and a number of them explicitly connected their own role as painters, sculptors, or graphic artists with the life force of animal matter. As nature's protagonists, the animals in these artworks assume many different kinds of roles, often quite subtle and hard to construe. When studied as a group, they offer striking insight into how early moderns struggled to define and depict the animal ?soul.?
