‎Hans (Jean) Arp (1886-1966) and Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) are probably the best-known artist couple in modern art of the 20th century, alongside Robert Delaunay and Sonia Delaunay-Terk. Both were highly gifted and worked in many different genres. Arp was a painter, poet, sculptor and made collages, drawings, reliefs, textiles, woodcuts and much more. TaeuberArp was a textile artist, dancer, designer, editor of an art magazine, painter, sculptor and teacher. They were both pioneers of abstract art, Arp in a biomorphic way, Taeuber-Arp in a more geometric way. As pioneers of abstract art. they created a unique body of work. When they met in Zurich in 1915, shortly before Dada began, it was the beginning of a lifelong, fruitful artistic exchange and collaboration. From drawing to construction, from textile to wall paintings, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Hans (Jean) Arp gave rhythm to their lives, opening up geometric and organic abstraction to dance. decor, architecture, sculpture and the applied arts. Like other artist couples. they developed not only an emotional but also an artistic intimacy, as they closely followed the creation of their partner's work and discussed their aspirations almost daily. Each partner implicitly regarded the other as both disciple and guide, even when the two were working on the same project. They interacted alternately as producers and critics. performers and spectators, and considered their joint efforts not so much in the light of individual works or even a series of works in progress, but in terms of an ideal community in which other artists would eventually participate. From 1926 to 1928, they worked together on several interior design projects in Strasbourg, which allowed them to move trom Zurich to Clamart on the outskirts ot Paris in an atelier-house designed by Sophie Taeuber-Arp. The French years - from spring 1929 to autumn 1942, when they left France tor a temporary stay in Switzerland, where Taeuber-Arp accidentally died in 1943 in Zurich - were their most successful years as artists and as a couple.‎

‎In the Treasure Room of the Sakra King: Votive Coinage from Gandharan Shrines‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 240 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:200 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9780897223676.‎

‎Summary In a lush valley within the Sakra peak in Gandhara (northwestern Pakistan) is a vast limestone cave temple, part of an ancient Hindu sacred complex. For over 700 years, this cluster of shrines minted hundreds of varieties of their own votive coinage - a unique case in Central and South Asia. These were minuscule copper coins, issued for pilgrims, featuring eclectic and original combinations of Greco-Roman, Iranian, Indic, and Islamic iconography. This book examines the native Sakra copper coinage issued from circa 550 to 1100, corresponding to the Nezak, Turk Shahi, Hindu Shahi, and Ghaznavid dynasties. These coins provide a window into what may have been an ecclesiastical administration exercising varying degrees of autonomy throughout its lifetime. They practically blur boundaries between vernacular folk art and monetary instruments serving political or confessional agendas. The book relates both the remarkable story of these coins and the sacred sites, and introduces the obscured history of the most neglected yet formative 500 years of Pakistan and Afghanistan's history. It also offers new paradigms for conceptualizing local currency, the making of religious imagery, and the process of transculturation. Importantly, the Sakra coins issued under Ghaznavid rule overturn popular misconceptions about early Hindu-Muslim encounters, suggesting instead that the Ghaznavids pursued a flexible, negotiated policy with regard to Hindu sacred sites. ‎Malay Archipelago. The Land of the Orang-Utan and the Bird of Paradise. A Narrative of Travel with Studies of Man and Nature.‎

‎ London, Macmillan, 1890 Green cloth with gilt titles, 515 pages, 10 maps, two fold-out, numerous illustrations, 19 x 12.5 cm, English text. *fair condition, spine slightly damages, otherwise good.‎

‎The Malay Archipelago is a book by the English naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace which chronicles his scientific exploration, during the eight-year period 1854 to 1862, of the southern portion of the Malay Archipelago including Malaysia, Singapore, the islands of Indonesia, then known as the Dutch East Indies, and the island of New Guinea. It was published in two volumes in 1869, delayed by Wallace's ill health and the work needed to describe the many specimens he brought home. The book went through ten editions in the nineteenth century; it has been reprinted many times since, and has been translated into at least twelve languages. The book describes each island that he visited in turn, giving a detailed account of its physical and human geography, its volcanoes, and the variety of animals and plants that he found and collected. At the same time, he describes his experiences, the difficulties of travel, and the help he received from the different peoples that he met. The preface notes that he travelled over 14,000 miles and collected 125,660 natural history specimens, mostly of insects though also thousands of molluscs, birds, mammals and reptiles. The work was illustrated with engravings, based on Wallace's observations and collection, by the leading illustrators Thomas Baines, Walter Hood Fitch, John Gerrard Keulemans, E. W. Robinson, Joseph Wolf and T. W. Wood.‎

Son ouvrage « Dissertation on the Numbers of Mankind in Ancient and Modern Times » voit le jour à Edimbourg en 1753. 1 vol. 8vo. Full contemporary calf. First edition under this title and second translation into French, by M.A. Eidous, considered the best of this major work by Robert Wallace, famous for having influenced Malthusianist thought. The author, Robert Wallace (1696-1771), was a pastor of the Church of Scotland, economist and member of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society. His work Dissertation on the Numbers of Mankind in Ancient and Modern Times was published in Edinburgh in 1753 in which he developed the idea that, after a rapid growth of the human population in biblical times, a divine measure favored the monogamy, which can only lead to a decrease in the population. A theory adopted by Montesquieu who oversaw the translation of his work into French. Wallace seeks to demonstrate that the earth was, in ancient times, more populated, and seeks the causes of this depopulation: physical causes (climate, sterility of regions, famines, pestilences, floods, earthquakes, etc.) and moral causes (wars, poverty, intemperance, illicit love, idleness, luxury, etc.). The Dissertation had already been translated into French by Elie de Joncourt in 1754. The second part of the work called "Critical Examination of the Discourse of M. Hume on the Population of Ancient Times, Compared with that of Ours" is a critique of the theories of his friend David Hume concerning the demography of ancient peoples. Very nice copy, rare. Particularly fresh interior.‎

‎, interart, 2020 Hardcover with dusjacket, 368 pages illustr. 23 x 20 cm. *NEW. ISBN 9781409197393.‎

‎Wes Anderson's beloved films announce themselves through a singular aesthetic - one that seems too vivid, unique, and meticulously constructed to possibly be real. Not so - in Accidentally Wes Anderson, Wally Koval collects the world's most Anderson-like sites in all their faded grandeur and pop-pastel colours, telling the story behind each stranger than-fiction-location. Based on the viral online phenomenon and community of the same name, Accidentally Wes Anderson celebrates the unique aesthetic that millions of Anderson fans love - capturing the symmetrical, the atypical, the unexpected, the vibrantly patterned, and distinctively coloured in arresting photographs from around the world. Authorised by Wes Anderson himself, and appealing to the millions who love his films, this book is also for fans of Cabin Porn and Van Life - and avid travellers and aspiring adventurers of all kinds.‎
