‎Piet Mondrian had a decisive influence on the development of painting from figuration to abstraction. On the occasion of his 150th birthday, Mondrian Evolution is dedicated to his multifaceted work and artistic development. Initially working in the tradition of late-nineteenth century Dutch landscape painting, Symbolism and Cubism subsequently took on great significance for him. ‎Summary Les travaux de l'iranisant slovéno-polonais Marijan Molé (1924-1963) ont exercé sur les sciences religieuses une profonde influence qui se laisse observer jusqu'à nos jours. ‎Kunstenaar Kris Martin breng in het Kasteel van Laarne een groep van tien hedendaagse Belgische kunstenaars samen in een groepstentoonstelling onder de titel NADIR. Het nadir (van het Arabisch nathir, 'tegenovergesteld') is in de astronomie het punt dat recht tegenover het zenit staat: het punt recht onder de waarnemer. Voor Martin is het een metafoor: kijken naar wat er is, naar de kern gaan. Maar ook: als Belgische kunstenaar werken met de unieke locaties die ons land te bieden heeft. In die zin is de tentoonstelling een voortzetting van de tentoonstellingen die Martin eerder initieerde. Hij besloot om voor NADIR het kruim van de Belgische kunstscene te selecteren: de generatie kunstenaars die hem zelf gevormd en beïnvloed hebben, op artistiek of vriendschappelijk vlak. Zijn persoonlijke pantheon, als het ware. Dat verklaart ook het enigmatische beeld bij de tentoonstelling: een satellietfoto genomen recht boven het Pantheon. ‎De Belgische kunstenaar Frans Masereel (1889-1972) zette zich in voor de sociale strijd van zijn tijd en onderschreef de communistische idealen, die de greep van het kapitaal op alle sectoren van het leven hekelden. In 1935 en 1936 maakte hij twee reizen naar de Sovjet-Unie om te zien of er in het Oosten wel degelijk iets nieuws aan de gang was. Dit boek beschrijft de lotgevallen van een vriend van het volk, aan de hand van zeldzame documenten en bronnen uit Russische archieven. De in 1889 in Blankenberge geboren Frans Masereel ging al snel spijbelen tijdens de lessen Schone Kunsten in Gent om de mysteries van de stad beter te kunnen doorgronden, in het gezelschap van de etser Jules De Bruycker. In 1911 verhuisde hij naar Parijs, waar hij zijn tekeningen in de pers (Les Hommes du jour, Le Rire) publiceerde dankzij de tussenkomst van de journalist Henri Guilbeaux, en waar hij zich vertrouwd maakte met de houtsnede bij een leverancier van kunstenaarsbenodigdheden. Toen Masereel in 1915 naar Zwitserland trok om nuttig werk te verrichten bij het Internationaal Comité van het Rode Kruis, maakte hij kennis met pacifistische schrijvers (RenéArcos, Pierre Jean Jouve, Romain Rolland, Stefan Zweig). De oorlog alleen kon zijn bestaan niet rechtvaardigen door de soldaten te elimineren, dus stelde Masereel voor om de drama's ervan te graveren in de pacifistische pers (Demain, Les Tablettes, La Feuille) en in zijn twee eerste gegraveerde reeksen Sta op, doden en De doden spreken, die in 1917 werden gepubliceerd. Het jaar daarop bracht hij 25 beelden van de passie van een man uit, een beeldverslag zonder woorden in houtsneden over het thema klassenstrijd. Aangemoedigd door de schrijvers van Mitteleuropa om daarin voort te gaan, begon hij in het interbellum - parellel met zijn activiteiten als illustrator en uitgever voor Le Sablier - aan een reeks xylografische romans die we vandaag kunnen 'lezen' als een compromisloos verslag over een zieke samenleving, bedwelmd door vooruitgang en winst. Frans Masereel legde zijn beitel voorgoed neer in Nice waar hij in 1972 overleed.‎

Frans Masereel est un graveur, peintre et illustrateur belge né le 30 ou le 31 juillet 1889 à Blankenberge (Belgique) et mort le 3 janvier 1972 (à 82 ans) à Avignon (France). Il a principalement travaillé entre la Suisse, l'Allemagne et la France. Artiste engagé, humaniste, libertaire, pacifiste antimilitariste3, marqué par le tourment sanglant de la Première Guerre mondiale, ses ouvres dénoncent sans concessions les horreurs de la guerre, de l'oppression et de l'injustice sociale. Auteur d'une ouvre profuse, illustrateur infatigable, pédagogue, son travail graphique le plus connu est sans doute Mon livre d'heures (1919) : il est considéré à ce titre comme le précurseur du roman graphique.‎

‎Summary The diffusion of Christianity along the Silk Road from Iraq and Iran to China in the premodern era has attracted scholarly attention in the West since the discovery of the famous Xian (Nestorian) Monument c. 1623. This initial discovery was dismissed as a Jesuit forgery by Voltaire, Edward Gibbon and many other scholars of the Enlightenment.
