The literature of the late middle ages provides the main focus for this collection of eighteen essays, which engage with the tight interweavings of poetry, book production, and politics at a time when all three were in a state of flux. Primarily covering the period from Richard II to Mary Tudor, the essays explore such topics as medieval guides to Ovid, aspects of late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century book history, and the major court poets of the Ricardian period, Chaucer and Gower.

Summary The commercial manuscript book-trade in Paris, that had begun as early as the mid-12th century, was severely disrupted by the arrival of the first printing presses in Paris around 1475. This new invention converted a traditional system of book production that had developed and flourished over the centuries from a handcraft to the mechanical printing press. It was a change that affected not only the livelihood of those who wrote the books and the artists who decorated them, but also the social life of the whole workforce involved in the production of books. This publication traces the activities to which 16th- and 17th-century book artisans had to turn, faced as they were with a dwindling market for manuscripts. Those most affected were the illuminators and scribes who now had to seek alternative ways of making a living and so devise strategems for finding employment in other trades that would benefit from their skills. Thus the reader will discover well-known artists and illuminators finding jobs like adding illustrations to printed books, colouring wood-block prints and designing patterns and motifs for embroideries, tapestries and even glass and metal objects. A most interesting opportunity for illuminators was to get involved with the decorating of fans, a new fashion promoted late in the 17th century by the Sun King Louis XIV himself. In addition to the richly illustrated text, the volume also includes a Register of more than 500 named Illuminators in alphabetical order, giving also their affiliation to their alternative trades and listing personal details including family members and professional associates. The authors Richard and Mary Rouse, who are already widely known for their thorough research into the medieval book trade in Paris with their volume Manuscripts and their Makers, published a similar biographical Register of documented book producers up to the year 1500. With the present publication they are able to reconstruct how much the younger members and relatives of whole families of previous manuscript illuminators were able to continue to contribute to the now newly developing book-trade. This volume is therefore not only a contribution to the history of art and that of the book, but also provides a vivid glimpse into the social history of the period. Home to some of the most remarkable spaces in contemporary culture, the cinema of David Lynch demonstrates an acute awareness of architecture. From the urban wastelands of Eraserhead to the eerie Red Room in Twin Peaks, Lynch's architecture is anxious, absurd and utterly distinct. Contemporary architects such as Peter Eisenman, Gehry and Nouvel have responded to these spaces in fascinating ways. This book is the first sustained critical assessment of the role architecture and design play in Lynch's films.

This revelatory catalogue delves into the many affinities shared between two widely renowned and discussed artists, Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) and Edvard Munch (1863-1944), whose intensely studied work has, until now, never been considered in relation to one another. Mapplethorpe + Munch brings to light how these two monumental figures curiously relate on an existential level, in how they deal with questions concerning sexuality, and in their way of utilizing self-portraiture as a means to explore issues of personal identity . Featuring essays that examine the thematic impulses behind the accompanying exhibition, this publication establishes a previously unexplored association between two equally contentious art figures, while working to impart alternative perspectives and new insight into their respective outputs. Although distinct in their legacies, Mapplethorpe and Munch remain remarkably intertwined.

After a brief introduction to drawing tools and materials, the first section of the book explores drawing as a means of recording the world around you. The emphasis is on drawing through observation in order to create realistic representations of your subject. It covers tried and tested means of sharpening your observational skills such as measuring with a pencil, looking at negative shapes and so on. The next chapter examines the physicalities of drawing. This is something that many drawing books overlook: drawing is actually a very physical process and you can use this as a means of getting a greater sense of energy and emotion into your drawings. Some subjects - botanical illusrations, for example - require very tight control of the drawing materials, while others - such as brooding skies in a stormy landscape - simply cry out for great sweeps of charcoal to convey the swift movement of rolling clouds. This chapter will help you assess what type of approach is best suited to the mood you want ot express The final chapter is all about developing new ways of seeing - taking an everyday subject such as a kitchen still life, for example, and homing in on a small area so that you're forced to look at textures and interlocking shapes in a way that you wouldn't normally do. This helps you to discover what it is that excites you visually about your subject matter - whether it's the colours, textures, shapes or patterns - so that you can take the first steps towards creating images that express what You as an artist want to say, rather than merely copying what's in front of you. Packed with easy-to-follow exercises, useful tips and inspiring images. The Creative Drawing Course will help you build up your skills and confidence step by step.
