Summary This book analyses the diffusion of anti-Judaic stereotypes and topoi in thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century model sermon collections. It concentrates on the sermons on Luke 19.41-48 where Jesus foretells the Destruction of Jerusalem. The preachers took the view that the Destruction of Jerusalem was divine vengeance for the Jews because they killed Jesus. Thus, these sermons were a good venue for those preachers who wanted to preach against the Jews. Model sermon collections were the closest thing to modern mass media. Consequently, their role in the diffusion of anti-Judaic attitudes was significant. The anti-Judaic writings of the early Church Fathers were only read by few literate church men, whereas model sermons reached the illiterate masses all over Christianity. Therefore, they played a major role in diffusing anti-Judaic attitudes amongst the population at large and thus contributed to the marginalization of the Jews, to various libels, expulsions, violence, and eventually to large-scale pogroms. Summary Seeking to heal people possessed by demons, stave off Lorenzo de' Medici's predations, and compete with the meteoric rise of Observant Mendicants - Franciscans and Dominicans - monks known as Vallombrosans performed multiple exorcisms in Florence and its countryside in the latter half of the fifteenth century. The accounts they wrote to publicize their efforts present an unusually lively survey of a little-studied sea change in late medieval religious life. In a religious landscape populated by Mendicant charlatans dressed as John the Baptist, concupiscent clerics, and pompous prelates, the Vallombrosans positioned themselves as committed to the decorous healing of Florentine peasants and nobles while weighing in on contemporary politics and claiming insight into Medici-related affairs such as the recent Pazzi Conspiracy. Yet traditional religious orders like the Vallombrosans and the Benedictines could not match the publicity, popularity, and secular political support garnered by Observant Mendicants in urban areas, and the latter's ascendance left religion at the end of the fifteenth century looking very different from what it had at its beginning. By the century's end, Observants predominated in influence, prestige, and patronage in cities across all of Europe. Sanctioning economic gain, addressing worldly moral dilemmas, and moving away from the older monastic focus on the dead and the afterlife, they shifted their focus to contemporary concerns. As over a traditional focus on communal life and monastic healing, Observants inaugurated individualistic forms of piety and fostered alternative forms of lay sociability and healing in the form of confraternities and urban hospitals. This rich study of the forces which impelled a group of Florentine monks to perform exorcisms opens a kaleidoscopic window onto religious practice, political and religious entanglements, and a decisive shift in religious and political life that transformed the fifteenth century. Summary Traditional representations of Constantinople during the period from the First Council of Constantinople (381) to the Council of Chalcedon (451) portray a see that was undergoing exponential growth in episcopal authority and increasing in its confidence to assert supremacy over the churches of the east as well as to challenge Rome's authority in the west. Central to this assessment are two canons - canon 3 of 381 and canon 28 of 451 - which have for centuries been read as confirmation of Constantinople's ecclesiastical ambition and evidence for its growth in status. However, through close consideration of the political, episcopal, theological, and demographic characteristics unique to early Constantinople, this book argues that the city's later significance as the centre of eastern Christianity and foil to Rome has served to conceal deep institutional weaknesses that severely inhibited Constantinople's early ecclesiastical development. By unpicking teleological approaches to Constantinople's early history and deconstructing narratives synonymous with the city's later Byzantine legacy, this book offers an alternative reading of this crucial seventy-year period. It demonstrates that early Constantinople's bishops not only lacked the institutional stability to lay claim to geo-ecclesiastical leadership but that canon 3 and canon 28, rather than being indicative of Constantinople's rising episcopal strength, were in fact attempts to address deeply destructive internal weaknesses that had plagued the city's early episcopal and political institutions.

Reframing Jordaens Pictor doctus . Techniken . Werkstattpraxis Pictor doctus . Techniques . Surprisingly, until recently, the Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens was still overshadowed by Peter Paul Rubens in the scientific debate. This fact is owed to the 19th century of the genius and discourses on painter princes. However, Jordaens was the head of a significant workshop and had a major influence on the Antwerp art market for 40 years after Rubens? death. This extensive collection of essays combines for the first time in balanced proportion the research of renowned experts on Jacob Jordaens from the field of art history with that of painting restoration. The interdisciplinary approach allows a closer look at the workshop?s practice and the artist?s creative processes. This results in a new image of the artist, who stands out for his undreamed-of innovative strength as well as his pictorial and intellectual independence.

The book is the first comprehensive edition of all hitherto identified fragments of the K'anti Kilguluk Nom Bitig in Old Uygur (Old Turkic) culled from several collections of Central Asian manuscripts in Germany, Russia, China and Japan. The text is a translation in 40 chapters of a Chinese Buddhist work (Cibei daochang chanfa) which belongs to the apocrypha. It testifies to the strong influence of Chinese Buddhism at the beginning of the second millennium A.D. among the Uygurs. The objective of the work, which was intended to be recited during a ritual, is the expiation of sins. Another aim was to rescue the patrons' relatives from a life in unfavourable births among hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals etc. Remarkable is the insertion of what must have been originally about a thousand Buddha names numerous of which are preserved in the Old Uygur version.
