Hugo Claus dacht bij elk boek, bij elke dichtbundel of toneelstuk, eerst en vooral aan wat Jan ervan zou denken?. En als Louis Paul Boon iets goeds had geschreven, wist hij vaak al: Dit zal Jan mooi vinden! Dit zal hij graag lezen. Tussen 1944 en 1965 was Brusselaar Jan Walravens (1920-1965) het absolute ijkpunt in de Vlaamse avant-garde. Hij introduceerde het existentialisme en was de eerste die in het Nederlandse taalgebied sprak over experimentele poezie. Met zijn tijdschrift Tijd en Mens bracht hij Vlaamse en Nederlandse Vijftigers en Cobraschilders bijeen. In de laatste jaren van zijn korte leven was hij een van de culturele televisiepioniers en interviewde hij bijvoorbeeld W.F. Hermans tijdens zijn tv-debuut. Ook schreef hij twee ophefmakende romans en een aantal ontroerende novellen. De verdeelde mens is gebaseerd op veel niet eerder gepubliceerde documenten, zoals Walravens? dagboeken, de brieven aan zijn verloofde en zijn correspondentie met Hugo Claus. Ze geven een beeld van het nog verrassend cultureel bruisende Berlijn in 1943, de Brusselse kunstwereld na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de doorbraak van de avant-garde in literatuur, schilderkunst en theater in de jaren vijftig.

Piet Mondriaan catalogue raisonne of the naturalistic works (until early 1911) ; Catalogue raisonne of the work of 1911-1944 . Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944) is clearly best known for his abstract paintings with red yellow and blue expanses of colour. Yet in the course of his fascinating life the artist explored many style trends which eventually around 1920 led him to the pure abstraction of Neo-Plasticism. This catalogue of his work is unique in that for the first time it offers a review of the whole of Mondrian's oeuvre from his first figurative paintings right up to his abstract neo-plastic work. This Catalogue raisonn includes a chronological list of exhibitions and an extensive comprehensively illustrated chronology of Mondriaan's life and career. The information on exhibitions literature and provenance has been assembled from a wide study of the original documentary sources supplemented by information acquired from numerous interviews with Mondriaan's contemporaries. The catalogue notes (in English) are chronological; as well as the usual technical data there is a detailed discussion of each work and a black-and-white illustration. The book also contains a register of his work with cross-references to the Seuphor-Ottolenghi catalogue and an index. With financial assistance from the Grant Program of the J. Paul Getty Trust many of the paintings have been re-photographed in colour especially for this book so that full justice can be done to Mondrian's works.

En 1927, le secr taire communal de Huy, Ren Dubois, passionn d?histoire locale, publiait un Essai d?iconographie hutoise ou description des vues, plans, portraits et m dailles relatifs la ville de Huy ainsi qu?aux ch teaux et maisons religieuses des environs (1574-1900) (Annales du Cercle Hutois des Sciences et Beaux-Arts, t. XXI) , dont le noyau tait form par la splendide collection qu 'il avait patiemment r unie et que l?on peut admirer aujourd?hui au mus e communal. Malgr son caract re incomplet et nombre d?imperfections et d?erreurs de d tail, cet essai garde encore toute sa valeur. Le pr sent volume ne pr tend le remplacer, ni comme catalogue, ni comme inventaire. La documentation - le lecteur s?en rendra compte en feuilletant les pages qui suivent - est extr mement abondante et de plus dispers e un peu partout. Le d pouillement exhaustif des principaux centres de documentation europ ens exigerait lui seul un temps et des subsides consid rables. Aussi cette enqu te se place-t-elle sur un plan diff rent. Plus modeste, puisqu?elle se limite aux peintures, gravures, dessins, cartes et plans dont d j le nombre est suffisamment lev . Plus ambitieux pourtant, puisqu?elle s?efforce de d gager une typologie, qui viserait mettre en vidence, originaux ou in dits, en d terminer l?auteur, la date et la valeur en les rapprochant d?autres sources, les regrouper selon les traits communs qu?ils pr sentent (orientation, raison d? tre, technique employ e). Bref, elle voudrait faire pr valoir un ordre, tout provisoire, dans une mati re o a r gn jusqu? pr sent une confusion assez regrettable, comme l?ont montr les controverses propos de la Nativit du Ma tre de Fl malle. En s?appuyant sur l?apport de l?illustration, on a tent , par la m me occasion, de r aliser une sorte d?atlas urbain qui permettrait aux historiens de saisir la ville dans sa r alit figur e, en vue d?une tude plus approfondie de sa topographie entre le XVe et le XIXe si cles. Le cadre dans lequel s?est d roul e l?histoire hutoise n?est pas immuable: ce n?est pas d?aujourd?hui que les hommes et les v nements s?ing nient le transformer, c?est- -dire l?am liorer ou le d truire. Aussi l?image que l?on se fait de la ville varie-t-elle dans l?esprit des g n rations: la documentation r percute assez fid lement ces changements dans la mentalit . Voor het eerst integraal vertaald in het Nederlands Maurice Maeterlinck begon zijn literaire carri re als dichter. Zijn eerste volwaardige publicatie was een reeks van drie ndertig gedichten, die meteen de wereld van de letteren verbaasde. Niet lang daarna volgde een tweede bundel, met symbolistische po zie pur sang waarin angst en noodlot de hoofdrolspelers vormden. Het is merkwaardig dat Maeterlinck, van wie de po zie ongemeen creatief en vernieuwend bleek, zijn latere gedichten niet meer gebundeld heeft. Dat zou de Leuvense hoogleraar Joseph Hanse in 1965 in zijn plaats doen. Met alles samen zeventig gedichten beslaat Maeterlincks po zie slechts een klein deel van zijn immense oeuvre, maar ze is wel van uitzonderlijk belang. De kwalificatie 'meesterwerk' is dan ook eerder regel dan uitzondering. Deze verzamelde gedichten overspannen de hele schrijverscarri re van de Gentse Nobelprijswinnaar en laten ons zien hoe veelzijdig Maeterlincks talent was en hoe versatiel zijn verbeelding.

Pieter Bruegel de Oude (1525/30-1569) is een van de beroemdste schilders van de Nederlanden. De expo vindt plaats van 15 oktober 2019 tot en met 16 februari 2020 in het Paleis van Karel van Lotharingen in Brussel, dat voor deze gelegenheid opnieuw zijn deuren opent na een lange renovatie. Rond het midden van de zestiende eeuw werd Vlaanderen het internationale productie- en handelscentrum voor grafiek. Samen met zijn uitgever, Hieronymus Cock, speelde Bruegel een sleutelrol in deze bloeiperiode. De tentoonstelling focust op het unieke vakmanschap en de ondernemerskwaliteiten van beide heren en toont aan de hand van verschillende staten en edities het lange maakproces dat grafisch werk ondergaat, van ontwerptekening tot afgewerkte prent. Summary Institutions under royal control included not only the king's royal residences and the royal chapels attached to them, but also magnificent convent-palaces and individual monasteries belonging to specific religious orders with close affiliations to the Spanish Crown. These Spanish Royal Sites, a diverse global network that helped to shape the Spanish Monarchy politically and socially in the seventeenth century, extended across the different kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula and beyond to other territories in Europe, America and Asia under Spanish rule. The religious practices that occurred there were an essential aspect of studying the justification of power, the pre-eminence of (ecclesiastical and temporal) institutions and, in the case of the Spanish Monarchy, its relations with the Holy See. This volume brings together scholars from various humanities disciplines, opening up novel avenues of research for studying the organization of royal institutions in the different kingdoms of the Habsburg Spanish Monarchy, especially in questions related to religion and royal piety.
