‎Pierre Curie est de nos jours aussi peu connu que Marie Curie est célèbre. Epoux obscur d'une femme illustre, il n'évoque, pour beaucoup, qu'un nom associé à celui de Marie. On se souvient seulement que, avec sa femme, il découvrit le radium en purifiant des tonnes de minerais dans un hangar devenu légendaire. Or, en 1903, quand ils reçurent (avec Henri Becquerel), le prix Nobel de physique, personne ne songeait à les dissocier dans leur gloire commune. Mais la renommée de Marie n'a cessé de croître jusqu'à faire d'elle, rapidement, une sorte de mythe ; Pierre en revanche tomba peu à peu dans un oubli presque total. Pourtant, bien avant de rencontrer Marie Sklodowska, sa future femme, avant de commencer à étudier la radioactivité, ce qui les rendit célèbres, Pierre Curie était déjà un savant reconnu, l'auteur de travaux suffisamment importants pour lui assurer, pour toujours, une place dans l'histoire des sciences. Quinze ans avant la découverte de la radioactivité, il mit en évidence, avec son frère Jacques, la piézoélectricité, phénomène dont les applications touchent de près à la vie quotidienne. Il posa les fondements du magnétisme, inventa également de nombreux appareils de mesure. Surtout, il découvrit le principe de symétrie, un des plus fondamentaux de ceux qui régissent la physique, mais trop abstrait pour attirer l'attention générale. Pierre Curie est l'auteur d'une oeuvre abondante, mais il mérite l'intérêt pour bien d'autres raisons. Tout en étant l'un des derniers de ces savants individualistes et marginaux qui poursuivent en solitaires leur quête de la vérité scientifique, il fut aussi un précurseur de la "grande science", celle qui ne peut se faire sans des moyens financiers énormes et qui exige l'appui et l'engagement de la société. Le laboratoire où il commença ses recherches n'avait pas d'installation électrique ; vingt ans plus tard Pierre Curie découvrit l'énergie contenue dans l'atome. Passionnément convaincu des bienfaits du progrès que devait apporter le développement de la science, il fut un des premiers à prendre conscience des dangers qu'il pouvait entraîner. ‎

‎Fifteenth-century Florence is generally considered the cradle of the modern architect. There, for the first time since Antiquity, the Vitruvian concept which distinguishes between builder and designer was recognised in architectural theory, causing a fundamental rupture in architectural practice. In this well-established narrative Northern Europe only followed a century later when, along with the diffusion of Italian treatises and the introduction of the all?antica style, a new type of architect began to replace traditional gothic masters. However, historiography has largely overlooked the important transformations in building organisation that laid the foundations for our modern architectural production, such as the advent of affluent contractors, public tenders, and specialised architectural designers, all of which happened in fifteenth-century Northern Europe.
