Stefaan Evenepoel bespreekt daarin de eerste vijf bundels - van Onder het vee tot Een lege plek om te blijven - die Kopland tussen 1966 en 1975 heeft gepubliceerd. De auteur gaat uit van stilistische kenmerken van deze bundels, waarna hij op zoek gaat naar de relatie met Koplands thematiek, met zijn visie op werkelijkheid en poezie. Gaandeweg laat deze studie zien hoe de gedichten erin slagen om bij zovele lezers de indruk op te roepen dat iemand rechtstreeks tot hen spreekt, dat iemand zich aarzelend, tastend, zoekend tot hen richt. De opeenvolgende hoofdstukken staan met andere woorden ook in het teken van de sterke communicatieve kracht van Koplands poezie. Zo wordt in het eerste hoofdstuk de vraag geformuleerd naar de precieze aard van de zogenaamde 'anekdotiek' in de vroege poezie. Om daarop in te gaan, brengt de auteur ook de ontvangst van de opeenvolgende bundels in de literaire kritiek in kaart. De volgende hoofdstukken behandelen de overeenkomsten van Koplands poezie met het woordgebruik en de zinsbouw van gesproken taal en ze besteden extra aandacht aan het typisch poetisch verschijnsel van het enjambement.
