‎Born in 1964, Berlinde de Bruyckere, who lives and works in Ghent, is an exceptional phenomenon in contemporary art. In her works, there is a moving and bemusing sense of physical fragility to the point of it metamorphosing into other beings. With science now capable of generating nature, these works raise ethical issues, and, in their emotional and aesthetic detachment from the voyeurism of the media and the mechanisms of advertising images, they are provokingly existential. De Bruyckere?s works share with Cranach the Elder the physical vulnerability visible in the nudes and the figure of the Man of Sorrows. In images from films by Pasolini, the body acts as the language of a reality verging on myth. Cornu made a number of important contributions to spectrum analysis including very precise measurements of the wavelenghts of certain lines in the hydrogen spectrum. By observing the dges of the solar disk and applying the Doppler-Fizeau principle, he found a means of separating the solar spectra from the terrestrial spectra ; in the case of the latter he separated the influence of water vapor from that of air. Following the discovery of the Zeeman effect Cornu showed that the D line of sodium is decomposed, under normal magnetization, into four components, as opposed to three, thus forcing Lorentz to modify his theory of the Zeeman effect. Cornu's optical researches also included studies of conditionsfor achromatism in interference phenomena ; his work on measurement of the curvature of lenses ; and his explanation of vertain observed anomalies in the behavior of diffraction gratings in terms of minute variations in the distance between successive lines... ‎L'Édit de Turgot de 1776 supprimant les corporations souleva de très fortes résistances. Le Parlement de Paris refusa de l'enregistrer et il fallut un lit de justice le 12 mars 1776 pour l'y contraindre. Ceci provoqua la disgrâce de Turgot qui fut révoqué. Les Corporations furent rétablies par un nouvel édit d'août 1776 et supprimées définitivement par le décret d'Allarde en 1791. (d'après Wikipédia). ‎
