‎Edition originale très peu commune.Dans cet important essai d'hydrodynamique, écrit dans la continuité du Traité de dynamique de 1743, d'Alembert expose pour la première fois ses fameux paradoxes montrant que, d’après les solutions les plus simples des équations hydrodynamiques, un corps devrait pouvoir progresser dans un fluide sans éprouver aucune résistance ou, ce qui revient au même, qu’une pile de pont plongée dans le cours d’un fleuve ne devait subir de sa part aucune poussée. C’était obtenir un résultat contraire à l’intuition et à l’expérience. ‎Édition originale de l'un des trois grands traités d'hydrodynamique de Jean Le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783), conçu explicitement comme le prolongement de son Traité de dynamique (1743), qui avait assuré sa consécration en formulant le principe de d'Alembert : « les lois générales d'un mouvement quelconque de systèmes de corps, liés ou non entre eux, libres ou contraints par des forces, en faisant usage de la méthode des déplacements virtuels » (En français dans le texte, 169).Dans ce second traité, d'Alembert applique ce même principe à la mécanique des fluides, offrant une alternative rigoureusement analytique à l'Hydrodynamica de Daniel Bernoulli (1738), dont il reproche l'usage du principe de conservation des forces vives « pour déterminer le mouvement d'un fluide dans lequel il y a quelque part dont la vitesse diminue ou augmente en un instant d'une quantité finie » (d'Alembert, Traité des fluides, p. xvij-xviij, cité par ENCCRE). D'Alembert substitue aux postulats de Bernoulli une approche purement géométrique et analytique, exempte de notions métaphysiques — unifiant sous une même méthode l'étude de l'équilibre des solides et la dynamique des substances liquides ou gazeuses. D'Alembert lui-même donna un compte rendu de l'ouvrage dans l'article Hydrodynamique de l'Encyclopédie, qu'il cosignait avec Diderot.L'ouvrage contient d'importantes contributions sur la théorie de l'écoulement dans les tuyaux et les vases — fondements de la cinématique des fluides moderne. ‎NICOLAES GILLIS (Antwerpen 1593 - Haarlem 1630) behoort tot de eerste beoefenaars van het zelfstandige stilleven. Over zijn leven was tot nog toe niet veel bekend, behalve dat hij uit Antwerpen kwam en in Haarlem werkzaam was. Nieuw onderzoek wijst op een gedegen leertijd in Antwerpen, waarna Gillis furore maakte als pionier van het Haarlemse voedsel- en bloemstilleven. In Antwerpen heeft Gillis veel geleerd van Osias Beert; in Haarlem was de kruisbestuiving met Floris van Dijck van belang. De gezamenlijke invloed van Gillis en Van Dijck zou zich uitstrekken naar volgende generaties stillevenschilders. Het oeuvre dat Nicolaes Gillis heeft nagelaten is niet erg groot. Dit boek laat echter zien dat het veelzijdiger en invloedrijker is geweest dan voorheen werd aangenomen. Gillis was niet alleen een schakel tussen Antwerpen en Haarlem, maar ook een echte vernieuwer. Deze eerste monografie met catalogue raisonn is het resultaat van uitgebreid kunsthistorisch onderzoek en speurwerk in archieven. Behalve een overvloedige bron van informatie, vormt het boek een terecht eerbetoon aan Nicolaes Gillis. Drs.
