‎From Sun-Day to the Lord's Day. The Cultural History of Sunday in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 528 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:8 b/w, 2 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Language(s):English, German. *new ISBN 9782503598260.‎

‎Summary Ever since the Christianization of the planetary week in Late Antiquity, the notion of Sunday as a day of rest, as well as the rhythm of a seven-day week, has been a constant. Yet the cultural history of Sunday in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages is complex. Detailed research reveals a greater diversity than appears at first glance. For example, Sunday did not simply replace the Sabbath, nor was the Jewish Sabbath commandment directly adopted. Furthermore, the Sunday laws of Emperor Constantine officially gave the inhabitants of the Roman Empire a day of rest free of work, but the effect and reception of the laws is hard to grasp, even among Christian authors. Moreover, Sunday was by no means a central theme in the history of late antique Christianity, so that the scattered references must be interpreted. This edited collection, based on a conference in Vienna in 2019, investigates the relevance of Sunday and the weekly rhythm in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages in the everyday life of people, in monasticism, in synods, in further imperial and ecclesiastical laws, and in disciplinary and liturgical developments. It also covers controversies with the Jewish Sabbath as well as reflections on the aspect of rest, freedom, and of charity. While exploring different views and regional differences, the contributions show the growing importance of the Lord's Day, especially since the sixth century, as part of the Christianization of society and the sacralization of the calendar. ‎Summary Ancient commentaries on poetry - due to their heteronomous nature, their miscellaneous character, and the fact that most of them are transmitted in abridged and anonymous form - are usually not considered 'authorial' texts in the same way as poems or literary prose are. Nevertheless, as didactic texts, they rely on authority to convey their interpretation, and they also often seem to have been perceived as products of authorial activity, as paratexts, references and pseudepigraphic attributions demonstrate. The aim of this volume is to explore this tension and to examine commentaries and scholia on poetry in terms of authorship and 'authoriality'. The contributions use several Latin and Greek corpora as case studies to shed light on how these texts were read, how they display authorial activity themselves, and how they fulfil their function as didactic works. They provide reflections on the relationship of author, authorship, and authority in 'authorless' traditions, explore how authorial figures and authorial viewpoints emerge in an implicit manner in spite of the stratified nature of commentaries, investigate the authorial roles adopted by commentators, compilers and scribes, and elucidate how commentators came to be perceived as authors in other exegetic traditions. ‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 378 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:16 b/w, 5 col., 2 tables b/w., Language(s):English, German. ISBN 9782503598666.‎

‎Summary The leitmotif of this volume is the concept of ?author images?, which is used in modern literary studies to describe processes of production and reading of literary works and is here applied for the first time to the study of ancient works. As a means of analysing ancient literature, it captures the aspect of personification, which is characteristic of ancient author concepts, and at the same time points to the fact that there is a difference between ?image? and ?author? and that it is only an image and not the author himself that can be seen and grasped by readers. This makes the ?author image? particularly suitable for examining the intersections of material, rhetorical and mental representations of literary authorship that form the subject of this volume. Using selected examples from Latin and Greek literature, the contributors explore the fields of cultural experience that nourish authorial images. They discuss the manifold possibilities of visualising and representing a person's quality of being an author in general or being an author of specific works, be it physically through artworks or pictures, metaphorically through evoked authorial figures, through thematised representations of authors in a text, or through the combination of authorial images and texts. These issues are addressed in four overlapping sections, each focusing on different areas of the metaphor's application, namely material images in the form of artworks, knowledge about persons, textual images as authorial strategies and images in reception. ‎Early Engravers and their Public The Master of the Berlin Passion and Manuscripts from Convents in the Rhine-Maas Region, ca. 1450-1500‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2004 Hardcover with dusjacket, 384 pages ., 178 b/w ill. + 67 colour ill. + + ills., 225 x 300 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9781872501529.‎

‎This is a book about the production and reception of engravings and metalcuts in the Rhine-Maas region during the second half of the fifteenth century. The Master of the Berlin Passion played a pivotal role in the printmaking industry of the Lower Rhine during this period. He, together with the engravers working in his ambit, specifically targeted their prints at the growing market for illustrated devotional manuscripts, doing so to an extent unparalleled by engravers elsewhere in Europe. As a result, experimental hybrid books combining manuscript and engraving were a phenomenon that flourished particularly in the Rhine-Maas region during the fifteenth century. The first part of this book deals with the production of engravings and metalcuts for the manuscript market, concentrating specifically on the Master of the Berlin Passion and the engravers and metalcutters in his circle. The motives of these printmakers related to broader cultural and social changes during the latter half of the fifteenth century. These were critical years of transition in methods of book production as printmakers and manuscript-makers across Europe strove to exploit the potential of new print technology combined with traditional craft skills. The second part of the book concentrates on the public for whom these printmakers worked. Prints that were pasted, bound or sewn into contemporary manuscripts, and which still remain in position, provide an unparalled opportunity to study the audiences of engravings and metalcuts. The vast majority of fifteenth-century prints no longer survive, and most of those that do are divorced from the original contexts in which they were used. These manuscripts thus provide an invaluable insight into the production, reception, circulation, meanings and functions of prints in the Rhine-Maas region at this time. The predominantly female ownership of Rhine-Maas manuscripts with inserted engravings is a major theme of the book. Most of the manuscripts discussed are vernacular prayerbooks or Books of Hours that belonged either to nuns or to members of the lay female gentry in the Low Countries. In many cases the books can be linked to the pietistic reform movement of the Devotio Moderna suggesting that, as in other areas of Northern Europe, there was a link between the use of prints and movements of monastic reform. This book contributes to our understanding of an important circle of print artists and their public; early uses of printing during the period of transition from manuscript to print; the functions of, and aesthetic attitudes towards, engravings in the fifteenth century and the role of engravings in religious devotion prior to the Reformation, particularly among women. This book is to be highly recommended to historians of visual art, late-medieval and early-modern culture, and gender studies. this excellent book is richly illustrated."A. ‎Duitsland, april 1945.
