‎Berlinde De Bruyckere (Ghent, 1964) has been a leading light in the international contemporary art world for many years already. Her raw, intriguing sculptures, installations and drawings draw strength from vulnerability and tenderness in the face of relentlessness. This exhibition catalogue shows her taking new steps on her artistic path, in search of the meaning of humanity, physicality, suffering and vitality. The themes in De Bruyckere's work have a universal and timeless value. But they gain extra urgency in times when, prompted by an unknown pandemic, the need for human connection is greater than ever, while at the same time the body has become a danger to mankind. De Bruyckere's compelling sculptures have a long and complex creative history. Much of her work is constructed of wax, resin, rope, skins and canvas, which she sometimes exposes to the elements for years before incorporating them into her art. Despite their confronting character the sculptures cry out to be touched and stroked, and exude warmth and the tangibility of existence. It is this powerful resonance that has made De Bruyckere one of the most important West European artists, ever since the early days of her career. Her oeuvre has been honoured by solo exhibitions all over the world. She has received several awards and has participated twice in the Venetian Biennale: in 2003 in the main pavilion, and in 2013 when she represented Belgium, in collaboration with Nobel Prize winner J.M. According to Berlinde, an angel - with its warm, dark wings - provides protection; a refuge from fear. ‎In het voorjaar van 2021 vormt het Bonnefanten het toneel van de nieuwste tentoonstelling van Berlinde De Bruyckere (Gent, 1964). De Bruyckere staat al jaren aan de internationale top van de hedendaagse kunst. Haar rauwe, indringende sculpturen, installaties en tekeningen vinden kracht in kwetsbaarheid en tederheid in het meedogenloze. In deze tentoonstelling zet ze nieuwe stappen op haar artistieke pad, zoekende naar de betekenis van menselijkheid, lichamelijkheid, lijden en levenskracht. De thema's in het werk van De Bruyckere hebben een universele en onophoudelijke waarde. Maar ze krijgen een extra urgentie in een tijd waarin, aangezet door een ongekende pandemie, de behoefte aan menselijke connectie groter dan ooit is, terwijl het lichaam tegelijkertijd een gevaar voor de mens is geworden. De Bruyckeres indringende sculpturen kennen een lange, ingewikkelde maakgeschiedenis. Veel van haar werk is opgebouwd uit was, hars, touw en huiden of doeken, die ze soms jaren blootstelt aan de elementen alvorens ze te verwerken. De sculpturen vragen ondanks hun confronterende karakter om aanraking, streling, warmte, en stralen de tastbaarheid van het bestaan uit. Het is deze krachtige uitstraling die De Bruyckere al vanaf haar vroege carri re tot een van de belangrijkste West Europese kunstenaars heeft gemaakt. Haar oeuvre is gelauwerd met solo-exposities in binnen- en buitenland, prijzen, en twee deelnames aan de Venetiaanse Bi nnale: in 2003 in het hoofdpaviljoen, en in 2013 toen ze Belgi vertegenwoordigde, in samenwerking met nobelprijswinnaar J.M. Coetzee. Het Bonnefanten vormt het toneel van haar eerste Nederlandse solotentoonstelling sinds 2015. Na twee mid-career overzichtstentoonstellingen te hebben gehad die de periode 2000-2014 belichtten, toont De Bruyckere in het Bonnefanten haar meest recente werk. In de tentoonstelling Engelenkeel ligt de nadruk op de periode 2014-heden. Er zal onder andere nooit eerder vertoond werk te zien zijn. Deze monumentale werken zijn ge nspireerd op het idee van een engel, zoals deze in mythes en verhalen, literatuur en de kunstgeschiedenis terugkomt. Geconcipieerd in de eenzaamheid en isolatie van de coronacrisis, behoedt de engel voor een eenzaam bestaan en, nog belangrijker, een eenzame dood. Volgens Berlinde zorgt een engel met zijn warme, donkere vleugels voor beschutting, een toevluchtsoord tegen angst. Het is een prachtig voorbeeld van de fragiele lijn die De Bruyckere bewandelt tussen artistieke dichterlijkheid en engagement met de actualiteit. De tentoonstelling Engelenkeel is samengesteld met recent werk uit de periode 2014 tot heden. De thema's waarop De Bruyckere de laatste jaren heeft gefocust zijn hier voor het eerst samengebracht, waardoor hun onderliggende raakvlakken kenbaar worden. Ook presenteert het Bonnefanten haar nieuwste, nog nooit getoonde werk, dat het licht zag tijdens de coronacrisis.‎

‎Catalogus met 450 foto's. Een veelzijdig kunstenaar wordt hier in deze catalogus beschreven. Niemand deed het Edmond Van Dooren na. Zijn oeuvre blijkt immens te zijn, dit zijn maar een aantal werken die ik heb kunnen traceren. Vele van zijn werken bevinden zich dan ook in privaat collecties, sommige vinden we zelfs niet terug. Zijn werk anarchie der ismen zegt veel over hem zelf want hij heeft er een heel deel van uitgeprobeerd. Hopelijk blijven zijn werken jarenlang ons oog strelen en krijgt deze kunstenaar eindelijk de roem die hem toekomt. ‎Long overshadowed by the brilliance of their close friend, Anthony van Dyck, Lucas and Cornelis de Wael, active as artists and dealers in Antwerp, Genoa and Rome, have largely been ignored in Flemish art historical literature. No monograph on them has appeared since 1925. This book aims to rectify this situation by giving a global overview of their wide-ranging pursuits. However, before assessing their personal histories it first examines the historical context, particularly with respect to the 17th-century art market in these three cities, with special attention given to its structure in Genoa, so far neglected in surveys of the Italian markets. A fresh appraisal of information from archival and other sources in each city has been undertaken to give a revealing up-to-date insight into their lives, trading activities in goods ranging from art works to second-hand clothing and hides, as well as their extensive network of friends and clients stretching from the Northern Netherlands to Sicily, including their close business association with the prominent Flemish art dealer Matthijs Musson and the Moretus family, owners of the Plantin-Moretus publishing house. Their own contribution to the art world is not neglected, with a full discussion of their works and an accompanying catalogue raisonne, which, in Cornelis de Wael?s case, includes his extensive oeuvre of paintings, drawings and prints.
