‎Zelden heeft een boek over Nederlandse literatuur in korte tijd zoveel stof doen opwaaien als De revanche van de roman van de Amsterdamse hoogleraar Moderne Nederlandse letterkunde Thomas Vaessens. Het beschrijft hoe de verhouding tussen literatuur en maatschappij sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog is veranderd en hoe geengageerde schrijvers als Frans Kellendonk, Arnon Grunberg, Joost Zwagerman en Charlotte Mutsaers op die veranderingen reageerden. Bij de tweede druk schreef Vaessens een geheel nieuw voorwoord als reactie op de discussie die naar aanleiding van de eerste druk is ontstaan. ‎

‎In de herfst van 2010 was schrijver Thomas Verbogt Artist in Residence in het Nijmeegse Besiendershuis. Tussen de eerste dag van de oktoberkermis van 2010 en de eerste sneeuw van dat jaar zocht hij naar het Nijmegen uit zijn jeugdjaren. Hij liep door herinneringen aan de stad waar hij lang geleden zo vaak met zijn vader wandelde en kwam als het ware weer thuis in zijn geboortestad, die hij eind jaren zeventig had verlaten. In Herfst in het oosten verzamelt hij een aantal van die herinneringen. Het is een collage van mijmeringen, verhalen en momentopnames. In 1979 verruilde Verbogt Nijmegen voor Arnhem, nauwelijks twintig kilometer verder, maar toch een andere wereld, waar hij zich overigens snel thuisvoelde. Hij bleef er zestien jaar wonen. Ook over die Arnhemse jaren schrijft hij in dit boek. In Herfst in het oosten put Thomas Verbogt zowel uit zijn herinneringen van lang geleden als uit die van gisteren. Leidmotief daarbij is de vraag wat het betekent om je ergens thuis te voelen. ‎

‎Summary While they often go hand-in-hand and the distinction between the two is frequently blurred, authority and power are distinct concepts and abilities - this was a problem that the Church tussled with throughout the High and Late Middle Ages. Claims of authority, efforts to have that authority recognized, and the struggle to transform it into more tangible forms of power were defining factors of the medieval Church's existence. As the studies assembled here demonstrate, claims to authority by members of the Church were often in inverse proportion to their actual power - a problematic paradox which resulted from the uneven and uncertain acceptance of ecclesiastical authority by lay powers and, indeed, fellow members of the ecclesia. The chapters of this book reveal how clerical claims to authority and power were frequently debated, refined, opposed, and resisted in their expression and implementation. The clergy had to negotiate a complex landscape of overlapping and competing claims in pursuit of their rights. They waged these struggles in arenas that ranged from papal, royal, and imperial curiae, through monastic houses, law courts and parliaments, urban religious communities and devotional networks, to contact and conflict with the laity on the ground; the weapons deployed included art, manuscripts, dress, letters, petitions, treatises, legal claims, legates, and the physical arms of allied lay powers. In an effort to further our understanding of this central aspect of ecclesiastical history, this interdisciplinary volume, which effects a broad temporal, geographical, and thematic sweep, points the way to new avenues of research and new approaches to a traditional topic. ‎Considéré comme le père du tunnel sous la manche, l’ingénieur Aimé Thomé de Grammond (1807-1876) a élaboré pendant près de 30 ans divers projets : tube métallique immergé, pont mobile, jetée géante... avant d’aboutir à ce tunnel ferroviaire présenté à l’Exposition universelle de 1867.
