Summary This study provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of Hus's ideas on the last things as they are presented in both his work and life. It examines the content and language of his works, particularly his Latin sermons and correspondence, from a literary-historical perspective. It explores general eschatology (Antichrist, purgatory, heaven and hell), as well as its intertwining with the Last Things that Jan Hus experienced personally in his struggle against Antichrist. Thus, the reader will learn not only about Hus's official ideas, but also about his intimate thoughts contained in correspondence written during his exile and even as he was in prison awaiting death. The book also presents Hus's eschatology in the broader context of Church reform. It clarifies how Hus's eschatology developed from its beginnings up to his death, and takes into account the writings of other thinkers whose ideas are connected to Hus's eschatology, such as John Wycliffe, Mil ? of Krom?? ?, Mat?j of Janov, and Nicholas of Dresden. The book also features an introductory prolegomena on Hus's life and work and early reform eschatology, which describes not only relevant Czech influences on Hus's eschatology (e.g. university theology, social-political factors, the Czech preaching tradition), but also European influences (e.g. Peter Lombard, heterodox doctrines). Summary Lucifer was Bishop of Cagliari in Sardinia in the middle of the fourth century. He was a devoted ally of the great theologian and Bishop of Alexandria, St Athanasius, and a strong opponent of Arianism and the Roman Emperor Constantius II. Exiled at the same time as Athanasius in AD 355 his surviving writings are all vituperative attacks on the emperor. The two books 'Concerning Athanasius' are his most substantial work, written in 359-360. Lucifer gives us a vivid picture of the passion aroused in the fourth century by debates about the nature of Christ and the relationship between the Church and the Roman Empire.

Luc Tuymans was born in Mortsel (BE) in 1958. To this day he still lives and works in Antwerp (BE). Tuymans works in his studio every day, perusing books to research his subjects. Nearly all his paintings are based on existing material such as drawings, personal photographs, found artefacts and movie stills. Tuymans almost always focuses on specific meanings reaching beyond what is shown, often founding the content on historical facts and materials.Often Tuymans will study one subject at length and spread it over several paintings. His self-willed way of painting has madeTuymans one the most respected painters of his generation. His work can be found in prominent international museums as well as in major collections. This publication appears on the occasion of Luc Tuymans" retrospective exhibition in Hungary. With innumerable analyses by arthistorians to precede us, we thought the most fitting and exciting accompaniment to this display would be a collection of writers" reflections on Tuymans" work. Since one of the things to make this retrospective display special is its being the artist"s debut in Central-Europe -Hungary and Poland -, we madea point of inviting authors from the region to comment on his art. A writer"s perspective will always be more uninhibited than an art historian"s. We gave complete liberty to our authors to decide what to reflect on: a picture, Tuymans" activity as a painter, or some other aspect of his personality. The narratives, which share the spirit of the pictures, there fore display a number of personal traits. Exhibitions: Budapest (Dec-jan. 2008, Munchen Haus der Kunst (March, April, May), Warschau (June, July)

Widely credited with having contributed to the revival of painting in the 1990s, Belgian painter Luc Tuymans continues to expand our understanding of the medium. Sourcing imagery from books, magazines, films, the internet, and increasingly his own iPhone photos, Tuymans's unique selection of subject matter reveals his fascination with moral complexities. Exploring diverse and sensitive topics, many of which include historic references from World War II to more contemporary events such as 9/11, Tuymans presents imagery that at first seems innocuous or approachable but upon deeper inspection can be entirely unsettling. Achieved through his masterful handling of paint, his works are often suggestive of memories or familiar people, places, and things. The latest in the Spotlight Series, which focuses on new bodies of work by contemporary artists, Tuymans continues to take on increasingly complex subject matters in his primarily muted palette. Published on the occasion of the artist's 2020 solo exhibition at David Zwirner Hong Kong, this book features an essay by art critic Su Wei, who approaches Tuymans's newest paintings and how they expand his oeuvre. Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) is known for a distinctive style of painting that demonstrates images' power to simultaneously communicate and withhold. Emerging in the 1980s, Tuymans pioneered a decidedly non-narrative approach to figurative painting, instead exploring how information can be layered and embedded within certain scenes and signifiers. Based on preexisting imagery culled from a variety of sources, his works are rendered in a muted palette that is suggestive of a blurry recollection or a fading memory. Their quiet and restrained appearance, however, belies an underlying moral complexity. They engage equally with questions of history and its representation as they do with quotidian subject matter. Tuymans's canvases, which are typically executed on a large scale, both undermine and reinvent traditional notions of monumentality through their insistence on the ambiguity of meaning. Su Wei is a curator and art critic based in Beijing. He is the senior curator of Inside-Out Art Museum (IOAM), Beijing. His curatorial projects include the 7th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale, China (2012)
