Since the mid-70s, Daniel Dewaele (Knokke, 1950) has followed a consistent course comprising numerous socially-engaged and -inspired art projects. On the basis of descriptions and illustrations of 43 projects, Daniel Dewaele, Selected Projects provides an almost complete survey of his work. Which makes this publication the standard work on this artist. In addition, the book offers a thorough insight into the conceptual tendencies that presented themselves in art as from the mid-70s. This unique book was created in close cooperation with the artist and appears on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name at Be-Part, Platform for Contemporary Art, in Waregem. The authors, Johan Pas and Pascal Gielen, each interpret the artist?s oeuvre on the basis of their own background, an artist who has always continued to ask how social participation could be achieved from an artistic position which by definition lies on the fringes of society.

In Piet Leppens, fotograaf.

This volume presents translations of two medieval Irish eschatological texts, with extended commentary. "The Vision of Adomn n" is the most elaborate and ambitious account of the afterlife in the Irish language: using the framework of "The Vision of Saint Paul", the author constructs a rich and vivid picture of the next world, drawing upon many sources including a remarkable account of the seven heavens as regions of testing and punishment. "The Two Sorrows of the Kingdom of Heaven" is a considerably briefer work, describing the Last Judgement and the reign of Antichrist with reference to the eschatological martyrs Enoch and Elijah.

The ultimate publication on Hokuei, the master of Osaka ukiyo-e printmakers and one of the most intriguing artists ever in kabuki-actor prints. Hokuei: Masterpieces of Japanese Actor Prints profiles one of the most intriguing artists ever in kabuki-actor design: Shunbaisai Hokuei (active 1828-1836). A culminating figure in Osaka printmaking, Hokuei produced more masterworks than any other artist of his day. The prints, all shown in color, are largely drawn from the most extensive collection of Hokuei's works to be found anywhere. The book presents two chapters on the artist's life and work, situating his oeuvre within the demimonde of pleasure and entertainment known as the Floating World (Ukiyo). An early chapter discusses the production of Japanese prints and leads into a central section highlighting fifty-six meticulously researched masterworks in remarkable condition. The world of kabuki comes alive in fascinating detail, while assessments of design and technical attributes bring into focus the achievements of Hokuei and printmaking artisans of his age. Of particular importance for scholars and collectors, there is a fully illustrated and annotated catalogue raisonn of 270 prints-the artist's entire known print oeuvre-including designs not to be found anywhere else. As an added bonus, all Japanese inscriptions are translated into English. Well-illustrated appendices cover essential tabulations of Hokuei's prints and their formats, his students, his artist signatures and seals, publishers, carvers, printers, theaters, a glossary, an index, and a bibliography. All-told, the range of comprehensive information featured in this publication make it a singular reference not only for admirers of Hokuei, but also for those interested in the world of actors on stage. - This is the first book about Hokuei - one of the most intriguing artists ever in kabuki-actor prints. Lavishly illustrated with over 150 prints, it brings the world of kabuki alive in fascinating detail. The book includes a fully illustrated and annotated catalogue raisonn of 270 prints (the artist's entire known print oeuvre). John Fiorillo is an independent researcher and writer on traditional and modern Japanese prints, with a particular interest in Kamigata-e ("Osaka prints") and Sosaku Hanga ("Creative prints"). Over time, he came to especially love and admire the actor prints produced in Osaka, a genre often overlooked by collectors and scholars. Mr. Fiorillo has regularly published in the art journal Andon (Society for Japanese Art, Leiden), contributed to the Hotei Encyclopedia of Japanese Woodblock Prints (2005), and designed and written extensive articles for the websites "ViewingJapanesePrints.net " (since 1999) and "OsakaPrints.com " (since 2005). Mr. Fiorillo also serves as a member of the Andon editorial board.

Of the triumvirate of sixteenth-century Venetian painters, Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto, Paolo [Caliari] Veronese (1528-1588) best conveyed Venice?s civic splendor. His masterpieces in the Doge?s Palace conferred on the Republic a magnificence and authority that was rapidly dwindling by the end of the Renaissance. But on a private level, he also reshaped the fashions of the Serenissima through a steady stream of portrait commissions. Many members of Venice?s most elite families sat for Veronese, as did notable artists and authors, including Titian and Sir Phillip Sidney. Once regarded as Venice?s best portraitist, his talents in this genre unfortunately remain largely unknown to modern audiences. This book offers the first comprehensive study of the approximately forty portraits that survive. Shedding new light on early works, such as the pendants of the Da Porto and the frescos of the Barbaro in the Palladian villa at Maser, Professor Garton also examines Paolo?s images of women within the larger polemics surrounding the anonymous beauties of Giorgione, Palma il Vecchio, and Titian. The author analyzes Veronese?s innovations in martial portraiture, melancholic portrayals of artists and nobility, and evocations of the antique. Relevant issues of social history, class insecurity, and poetic convention are all brought to bear in deciphering the meanings of these images and what they reveal about the painter and his clientele. This layered study of Venice?s golden age of painting ends appropriately with a glance at the ?moderns? who profited most from the study of Veronese?s portraits: Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Henri Fantin-Latour, Mary Cassatt, and Henri Matisse. A complete catalogue of Veronese?s portraits follows the chapters. John Garton, Ph.D., is assistant professor of liberal arts at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Summary Tablature is a generic term for music written as a table or a score, most often using letters or numbers instead of conventional music notation. It was mainly used for solo instruments such as keyboards, lutes and guitars and was a mainstream notation until the mid-eighteenth century. Tablatures were also used for many single-line instruments-strings, winds, and brass-as well as the human voice. Composers and choir masters were among the other musically bilingual musicians who used tablature in their professional lives. Tablature was the most natural way to write music in score until conventional notation was gradually adapted for score writing during the seventeenth century. Tens of thousands of tablature works survive from the early modern period until c.1750. Often dismissed as eccentric and impenetrable, tablature has frequently been seen as an obstacle, and often overlooked in music history studies. One of the principal aims of this book is to break down the barriers that have hindered the general assimilation of tablature repertories into the way we understand music of the past. Chosen from among thousands of surviving sources, this book presents a representative group of 435 tablatures selected by a team of leading international scholars to show the beauty, diversity, and practicality of the notation. For each chosen work, a facsimile shows the original notation and is accompanied by a modern transcription and commentary to demystify music that has too frequently been regarded as obscure or enigmatic. John Krmeling is certainly one of the most zany and inspiring artist-architects to come out of Holland in many years. The documented projects in this first comprehensive book on Krmeling are a sheer delight. The book features sketches and photographs of Krmeling's output over the last 12 years, including a stripped-down square car, dog suits for cars, a public park installation of fake clouds with artificial sunlight, and many others. Includes Krmeling's notes and extensive photo travel diary of failed and successful modernist architectural sites and urban landscapes in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
