‎Karel van de Woestijne (1878-1929) behoort met Gorter, Leopold en Boutens tot de grote dichters uit het fin de siecle. Door een nauwgezette lectuur, ook van het proza, brengt De Spiegel van Achilleus dit oeuvre weer onder de aandacht. De studie corrigeert meteen een aantal mythes, zoals dat van de decadente, eenzelvige poeet en van de mystieke asceet. De vitalistische laag in Van de Woestijnes werk wordt blootgelegd door een grondige analyse van de beeldspraak ? meer bepaald van de allegorie. Vandevoorde demonstreert hoe Van de Woestijne met andere teksten speelt om een pseudo-autobiografisch beeld te creeren. Aan deze analyse gaat een schets vooraf van het denken over allegorie en symbool vanaf het einde van de achttiende eeuw en van de cultuurhistorische omstandigheden die tot een heropleving van de allegorie rond 1900 in Nederland en Belgie leidden. Hans Vandevoorde laat zien dat Van de Woestijne schatplichtig was aan opvattingen van Frans-Belgische auteurs als Maeterlinck en Verhaeren. Het boek sluit af met een verrassende lectuur van het verhalende gedicht over de Amazonekoningin ?Penthesileia?. Zij laat zich door Achilleus afslachten aan de voet van Troje. Wat een verhaal van doodsverlangen en gender-strijd leek, ontmaskert Vandevoorde als een ode aan de moederliefde. Voor het eerst in de Van de Woestijne-studie wordt terdege rekening gehouden met het jeugdwerk van de dichter en wordt de hele correspondentie van de Gentse dichter benut. Bovendien bevat De Spiegel van Achilleus een originele theoretische benadering van de allegorie die een groot deel van de bestaande visies opslorpt, en bruikbaar is voor de analyse van zowel literatuur als beeldende kunst.‎

Hij staat ook symbool voor het licht en de zon, en is intens verbonden met de ?gouden tijd?: een mythisch tijdperk vol eindeloze overvloed en rechtvaardigheid. Hans Vlieghe ( 1939) studeerde kunstgeschiedenis aan de universiteit van Gent, waar hij ook enkele jaren werkzaam was als assistent. Daar is hij tevens lid van de raad van bestuur en werkt hij mee aan het Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard. Sinds 1990 is hij lid van de Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van Belgi voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen. Als hoogleraar was Vlieghe verbonden aan de universiteiten van Antwerpen en Leuven. Hij is gespecialiseerd in de Vlaamse schilderkunst van de zeventiende eeuw. Naast zijn onderzoek over De Crayer schreef hij tal van publicaties over (onder meer) Peter Paul Rubens en schilders uit diens entourage, over David II Teniers en Jan Boeckhorst. Sinds 2004 is hij met emeritaat, maar dat weerhoudt hem er niet van om kunsthistorisch onderzoek te blijven uitvoeren.‎
