‎The patrons of civic group portraits were corporate organisations such as confraternities, craft and militia guilds, charitable institutions, and administrative bodies. Up until now, the painted civic group has been primarily seen as a product of the Dutch Republic. While the genre may have been exceptionally important in the Northern Low Countries, the present study shows that such paintings were also fundamental in the South, with Bruges playing a central role. From the late fifteenth century until 1800, both the urban elite and the artisan classes of Bruges commissioned institutional group portraits, and the forms that those artworks took responded to local conditions and needs. The patrons? self-representation in these works was meant to emphasize the internal cohesion and solidarity within their group, and to reinforce that group?s social status in the urban community. In looking carefully at these contexts, this research project has provided new interpretations for civic group portraits and has demonstrated their richness as both cultural heritage and historical sources. The Bruges works, however, represent just a portion of those produced in the Southern Netherlands during the early modern era. The author provides an updated inventory of 190 civic group portraits that he has been able to trace for the Southern Netherlands. All of these works, moreover, need to be set in a broader European context, as civic group portraits are also recorded in Venice, Paris, and England, and were likely produced elsewhere as well. Future researchers will be able to expand our understanding of the genre as a European phenomenon, continuing to reveal the significance of these remarkable artworks and use them to gain deeper insights into the past. Legends of Saint Thomas Apostle, for instance, claimed that the martyred saint had been miraculously transported from India to Italy during the thirteenth century. However, Saint Thomas's purported resting place in Ortona, Italy did not become a major stopping point on pilgrimage or exploration routes, nor did this event punctuate frescoed life cycles or become a subject for Renaissance altarpieces as one would expect. Instead, the site of the apostle's burial in Chennai, India has flourished as a terminus of religious pilgrimage, where a multifaceted visual tradition emerged, and where a vibrant local cult of 'Thomas Christians' remains to this day. An unlikely destination on the edge of the 'known' world thus became a surprising source of early modern Christian piety. By studying the art and texts associated with this little-known cult, this book disrupts assumptions about how knowledge of Asia took shape during the Renaissance and challenges art historical paradigms in which art was crafted by locals merely to be exported, collected, and consumed by curious European patrons. ‎Summary This catalogue collects Italian biblical works issued from the beginning of print to the middle of the 17th century. The abundant literature had multiple uses: the transmission of the sacred text, its interpretation, preaching, religious education, and devotional uses (meditation and prayer). It was also used as a foundation of learning and general knowledge, ethics, professional practices (i.e. in medecine and politics), domestic piety and everyday life, as well as literary and theatrical entertainment. This catalogue will help to reconstruct the access to the Bible by Italian lay people. It contributes to the historiographical debate on how Italians could read the Bible after the ban of biblical translations. It represents an extremely rich source of information for future research about authorship, readership and the very nature and use of this production, shedding light on forgotten bestsellers of Italian Renaissance. ‎

‎Summary L'Italia ha prodotto prestissimo, seconda solo alla Germania, la stampa della Bibbia in volgare con ben due diverse edizioni nel 1471. Il testo sacro, che era gi molto noto in forma manoscritta, si cos diffuso ampiamente pure tra i laici, anche attraverso riscritture devozionali, erudite e letterarie. Spesso lo accompagnavano immagini, che erano gi interpretazioni, o veniva adattato per essere usato nella liturgia, per l'istruzione dei fanciulli, per la preghiera o l'orientamento morale, per essere letto ad alta voce o in privato, per essere rappresentato. Anche quando i volgarizzamenti delle Sacre Scritture vennero proibiti dalla Chiesa Cattolica, i testi biblici continuarono a essere letti nelle forme consentite o clandestine, rielaborati in forme letterarie o devozionali di grande successo, che ebbero a volte molte edizioni e un largo mercato editoriale. La Bibbia entrata cos nelle case degli Italiani e veniva tenuta presente non solo per la piet , ma anche per le normative sociali, professionali e ovviamente etiche. La raccolta di saggi studia sotto tre prospettive (circolazione del testo, lettura e interpretazione, riscritture letterarie) il modo con cui in Italia il mondo laico ha fruito del libro sacro nella prima et moderna, dall'avvio della stampa a met del Seicento.
