‎Literaire roman, novelle; Mijnheer Verwaeter, een wat benepen schoolvos, is collectioneur. Dwangmatig jaagt hij antieke miniatuurschilderijtjes na, echter niet altijd op een even koosjere manier, zeker niet tijdens de bezettingsjaren. Omdat hij op het stedelijk college geschiedenisles geeft, voornamelijk aan de hand van miniaturen verliest hij zijn job. Misschien is dat wel een geluk bij een ongeluk, want daardoor kan hij zich voltijds toeleggen op zijn al even verslavende als lucratieve obsessie. Na enkele jaren klinken zijn naam en faam als een bronzen klok in het elitaire en internationale verzamelaarsmilieu. Hij wordt voorgedragen als ereburger van de stad en opgenomen in de prestigieuze Internationale Academie ter bevordering van de kennis van de Miniatuurkunst. Maar dan haalt het verleden hem in. De meest schokkende en duistere geruchten over zijn beginjaren doen plots in de stad de ronde. Misschien worden die wel verspreid door een afgunstige rivaal? Zijn vrouw ziet daarin de bevestiging van bepaalde vermoedens die ze al langer had, waardoor Armand Verwaeter nog meer vereenzaamt. Bovendien wordt hij sinds jaar en dag geplaagd door soms helse pijnen aan een afschuwelijk etterend been. Dat doet hem steeds meer naar de fles grijpen. Maar ook dan kan het voor de collectioneur nog erger worden. ‎

‎Ce registre en partie débroché conserve encore 68 beaux feuillets vierges timbrés en tête. La belle étiquette du libraire d'Epierris contrecollée en garde précise notamment qu'il vendait du "Papier d'Angoulême et Registre de toutes grandeurs et qualité". Raymond Depierris ou de Pierris ou d'Epierris, comme il signait, vint s'établir à Niort vers 1755. Il était relieur et doreur de livres, mais il tenait aussi dans son magasin de la rue du Palais, près du puits Nalliers, la papeterie, les livres de piété, les cartes, estampes, etc., bagage ordinaire des libraires de province avant la Révolution. En 1791, il ouvrit une imprimerie et l'exploita jusqu'à sa mort (1793) arrivée dit un état officiel de la préfecture, dans les Guerres de Vendée (Clouzot, Notes pour servir à l'histoire de l'Imprimerie à Niort, 121). Prix en l'état pour ce registre dont le beau papier vergé trouvera facilement son remploi.‎
