This book examines the career of the Brussels artist Michael Sweerts through an examination of the artistic, intellectual and cultural contexts that shaped his work and academy in the Netherlands and Italy in the seventeenth century. The Flemish artist Michael Sweerts has long been considered one of the most fascinating and enigmatic painters of the seventeenth century. His peripatetic career, which stretched from his native Brussels to Rome, and later Amsterdam and the Far East, included work for the papal family and the foundation of a drawing academy in the Southern Netherlands. Despite this rich and varied career, Sweerts has yet to be fully examined within the artistic, intellectual and cultural contexts of Brussels and Rome in the seventeenth century. This book aims to retrace the artistic traditions that shaped Sweerts? development and evolution as a painter, etcher and teacher, firmly situating him at the crossroads of artistic exchange between the Netherlands and Italy. The author demonstrates how Sweerts responded to contemporary notions of artistic practice and pedagogy in his work, and how he played a critical role in the formation of a Netherlandish academic tradition. Approaching Sweerts from these new perspectives, this book examines the classicizing and artistic contexts of Brussels as a center of tapestry production, and reconstructs Sweerts? familial and social networks in the Netherlands and Rome. The artist emerges as a sophisticated figure amongst his contemporaries, including the French painter Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665), his patron, Camillo Pamphilj (1622-1666), nephew of Pope Innocent X, and the Flemish sculptor Francois Duquesnoy (1597-1643). Alongside a consideration of his sensitive scenes of peasants and artists in Rome?s urban landscape and strikingly life-like portraits and head studies, Sweerts? remarkable depictions of artists learning and practicing their profession are contextualized within the evolving conceptions of the academy in the early modern period. The author provides the first inclusive investigation of the artistic and socioeconomic frameworks that surrounded Sweerts? establishment of a drawing academy for artists and tapestry designers in Brussels in the 1650s. She brings to light the academy?s significance as a site of artistic learning and innovation, and the importance of working directly from life, while ultimately redefining Sweerts? place in the history of Flemish art.

Summary This volume provides the first wide-ranging investigation of the post-fifteenth-century reception of Jean Gerson (1363-1429), chancellor of the University of Paris, guiding light of the Council of Constance, and arguably the most influential of late medieval theologians. His impact on early modern movements and thinkers paved the way for many developments still shaping our existence today. Besides his well-known influence in theology and church history, the chancellor left a significant impact in jurisprudence, human rights, art, music, education, literature, and even medicine; there is hardly an area of the humanities that did not pay at least some tribute to his authority, and there was almost no early modern political or religious movement in the West that neglected his name. Nearly all of the most prominent early modern intellectuals perceived him as an authority and father figure; an illustrious cohort of celebrities, including Thomas More, Martin Luther, King James I, Ignatius of Loyola, Girolamo Savonarola, Christopher Columbus, Bartholomew de Las Casas, and many others, relied on his writings and ideas. The geography of his late-fifteenth- and sixteenth-century reception reflects his pre-eminence, reaching from Spain to Scandinavia. TABLE OF CONTENTS Acknowledgements Introduction Chapter 1. The book is the first edition of the Old Turkish commentary on the Vimalakirtinirdesa-Sutra. All fragments that were identified belonging to this commentary are now preserved in the Berlin Turfan Collection. The relevant commentary may have been based on a Chinese text, whose author was a representative of the Tiantai school. However, some lines in the Old Turkish version are the additions of the Uyghur translator or, more specifically, author and clearly show the strong influence of the Yogic'ra school, which was then studied with keen interest in Dunhuang, the neighbouring city of Turfan. This fact indicates the close relationship between this Uyghur author and the Buddhism in Dunhuang. Moreover, the Old Turkish version of the Vimalakirtinirdesa-Sutra (published by Peter Zieme as Berliner Turfantexte XX) is preserved. The comparison between these two texts shows, however, that both texts were independently translated into Old Turkish. Languages: German.

Buddhist colophons are the texts added after Buddhist sutras and commentaries. They were written by the individuals who composed the text in question (authors), translated it (translators), had it copied or printed (patrons), copied it (copyists), or read it (readers). While Buddhist sutras and commentaries were copied several times and handed down nearly unchanged through time, colophons were as a rule unique. In comparison with the former, the latter can therefore be described as individual. Many colophons were added to the Uighur Buddhist texts. These colophons provide essential information about Uighur Buddhism and Buddhists such as the date of the composition or translation of the text, the names of the authors, translators, patrons and members of Buddhist families, the reasons for acting as patrons and the requests expressed by them. This book is the first comprehensive edition of the published colophons. The author examines their historical development. Unpublished colophons have been added. Languages: German.

Summary The book revolves around some of the most important relics of Christendom ? chief among them the Crown of Thorns ? and the ways in which they became, effectively, personal objects of devotion, notwithstanding their ostensibly universal appeal. It was France that laid claim to the Passion and other relics in the middle of the thirteenth century in a campaign that involved the construction of a new magnificent chapel ? the Sainte-Chapelle ? designed specifically to display the relics, and the composition of new liturgies to celebrate and focus attention on them. As inert objects, relics could not accomplish much without being 'activated' one way or the other, whether in prose, poetry, paintings, statues, or in music. It is these modes of activation that endowed the substance of relics with identity and meaning that made them so powerful and effective. The liturgies studied in this book were some of the most critical mechanisms of activation; they enabled the power of the Sainte-Chapelle relics, articulated the nature of that power, and proclaimed it far and wide. Nowhere is this more evident than in the sequences memorializing these relics, which were chiefly cultivated and championed at the Sainte-Chapelle. This book examines these sequences, and the ways in which they give prominence to the underlying agenda of the French monarchy by promoting and naturalizing the notion of sacral kingship, rooted in biblical kingship. Summary Throughout a distinguished career, Raymond Van Dam has contributed significantly to our understanding of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages with ground-breaking studies on Gaul, Cappadocia, and the emperor Constantine. The hallmarks of his scholarship are critical study of a wide variety of written and material sources and careful historical analysis, insightfully rooted in sociological and anthropological methodologies. The essays in this volume, written by Van Dam's former students, colleagues, and friends, explore the dynamics between leaders and their communities in the fourth through seventh centuries. During this period, people negotiated profound religious, intellectual, and cultural change while still deeply enmeshed in the legacy of the Roman Empire. The memory of the classical past was a powerful and compelling social and political force for the denizens of Late Antiquity, even as their physical surroundings came to resemble less and less the ideals of the Greco-Roman city. These themes - leadership, community, and memory - have been central to Van Dam's work, and the contributors to this volume build on the legacy of his scholarship. Their papers examine how leaders exercised their authority in their communities, at times exhibiting continuity with ancient patterns of leadership, but in other cases shifting toward new paradigms characteristic of a post-classical world. Taken together, the essays produce a fuller picture of the Mediterranean world and add further nuance to our understanding of Late Antiquity and early Middle Ages as a time of both continuity and transformation.
