The work of seminal contemporary artist Chris Burden, insightfully contextualized around major themes, illuminates a practice that is as unique as it is influential. For four decades, Chris Burden's work has redefined the boundaries of the sculptural field. Whether subjecting himself to extremes of physical suffering or reconfiguring forgotten urban objects and toy models to create potent signifiers of a time and place, the brute force of Burden's work in the physical realm reverberates through the psychic one. On the occasion of the New Museum's focused survey of Burden's work, this book provides new perspectives on his art. Organized around themes like the Myth of the American West, the Institution, Gender Roles, and Model Making, the book reexamines preoccupations that span the artist's long career.

S.M.A.K. presents the first major retrospective of the Belgian video artist Koen Theys (°1963, Brussels). Theys was one of the founding fathers of the Belgian video art scene since the early eighties and stood at the cradle of the discourse around video art in Belgium and by extension throughout Europe. In his work Theys combines a thorough substantive and formal research on video art as a medium, with a very expressive - referring to a baroque aesthetic - imagery, often combined with references to the European and Belgian cultural and political history. The work of Theys was collected early by MOMA (New York) and Centre Pompidou (Paris). The book will survey his monumental video and photography-based works from the early 80s until now.

This volume is an exploration of the artistic cultural legacy of some of the most renowned medieval royal women, demonstrating their dedication to remain relevant for all time. Summary Medieval Mausoleums, Monuments, and Manuscripts: Royal Women?s Patronage from the Twelfth to the Fourteenth Centuries explores the manuscripts, monuments, and other memorabilia associated with the artistic patronage of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204), her daughters, Marie de Champagne (1145-98) and Matilda of Saxony (1156-98), as well as works generated by three queens of France, Marie de Brabant (1254-1322), Jeanne d?Évreux (1310-71), and Blanche de Navarre (1330-98). Through this study the shift in women?s artistic patronage over the centuries may be brought to light, as well as its evolution, evincing how each generation built upon the previous one. Further, despite the assorted shapes these women?s efforts embodied, ranging from manuscripts to stained glass windows, from funerary plaques, paintings, jewels and linens to monuments, mausoleums and endowments of institutions, including a variety of other forms, these women were notably unified in that their greatest output tellingly occurred during precarious points in their lives that threatened their positions, such as the potential political turmoil associated with the deaths of husbands or children. At these times their participation in acts of patronage solidified their places at court, in society, and within cultural memory while doubling as assertions of their political power and lineage. Thus, testaments, manuscript books, monuments, and memorials were not only a declaration or signs of one?s possessions, but also sites and documents that continued the politicking of the deceased. Summary Puglia is one of the most extraordinary parts of Italy. Inhabited for over 8,000 years, this region has experienced almost every type of civilization known to the European world. Little has been written in English about the surviving Neolithic and aboriginal Italic remains of Puglia, its rich architectural heritage of Greek, Roman, Early Christian, Byzantine, Angevin French, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and even its modern monuments. This book focuses on the important Islamic contribution to the architecture of Puglia, a contribution that was centered in the once Muslim city of Lucera and subsequently came to be of significance for the building of Christian cathedrals and churches in this beautiful region, little known to the outside world.? Lucera exemplifies all the periods of architecture noted above, and is, in addition, unique because it was a protected Muslim island in a sea of Christianity during the High Middle Ages - at the very time Christians were conducting crusades against the infidel. Thus the individuality of the place stands alone, among the many ancient cities of Puglia, because it was once a Muslim world. This book shows how Lucera had always been an important center in ancient times and how it came to be an Islamic city. It spotlights the accomplishments of the Muslims, and the influence they left - despite the brutal extermination they endured in the early 14th century - on the architecture of Lucera and other cities in north and central Puglia, including such important centers as Troia, Trani, Bitonto, Canosa, Altamura, Gravina, Giovinazzo, Terlizzi, Pietramontecorvino, Bisceglie, Ruvo, Castel del Monte, Molfetta, Bovino, San Severo, and Foggia. Thus the seventeen towns and cities whose architecture is studied and illustrated in this volume serve to highlight the Islamic legacy in Puglia, a part of Italy which is known - and revered by those who know - for its archaeological, classical, and Romanesque relics. TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter 1: Introduction: Puglia, the Background Chapter 2: The Setting: Lucera - The 'Shining Light' of Puglia Chapter 3: The Creation of a Muslim Colony Chapter 4: The Muslims in Lucera and a Brutal Goodbye Chapter 5: The First Building of the New (Christian) Lucera, its Cathedral Chapter 6: The Fourteenth Century Context: The Survival of Muslim Elements in Christian Lucera Chapter 7: The Legacy of Islam is Not Forgotten in Lucera to Modern Times Chapter 8: Muslim Elements in the Buildings of Surrounding Towns and Cities: Bitonto, Ruvo di Puglia, Terlizzi, Castel del Monte, Altamura, Gravina, and Giovinazzo Chapter 9: Muslim Elements in the Buildings of Surrounding Towns and Cities: Bisceglie, Trani, Molfetta, Canosa, Troia, Bovino, Pietramontecorvino, San Severo, and Foggia Chapter 10: Conclusions: The Significance of Lucera and the Muslim Legacy for Puglia

Summary Medieval science has become an increasingly popular area of academic interest over the past couple of decades, but much of this work has up to now concentrated on France and the Mediterranean, while relatively little attention has been paid to the north of Europe. This has led to the assumption that Northern Europe stood aside from the mainstream of scientific knowledge in the Middle Ages, when in fact the region was a vital part of the medieval network of scientific scholarship. This important volume aims to redress the balance in scholarship by bringing together for the first time a collection of studies on medieval scientific knowledge that focuses on both Scandinavia and England. The essays gathered here examine topics as wide-ranging as the intellectual network between Denmark and Paris; the role of Dominican friars in spreading scientific knowledge in Scandinavia; the practical application of technology by English armourers; fragments of scientific manuscripts found in early modern Swedish documents; the use of scientific volumes and descriptions of university life in medieval Icelandic literature; and fresh insights into the careers of the English scientists Roger of Hereford, Roger Bacon, and Robert Grosseteste. Together, these papers show the dynamism and depth of science in the medieval North, and offer new insights into how scientific wisdom travelled through, across, and between the peoples of this region. Summary In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the city councils of Hanseatic towns participated lively in the Northern European landscape of diplomacy. Often, it was conflict which lay behind the magistrates' diplomatic activities. Discord among the members of the Hanse, intercity disputes between individual burghers, and large-scale "international" altercations, all required town councils to engage with actors and institutions beyond the town walls. 'Councils, conflicts, correspondence' examines how the magistrates of the Hanseatic towns Lübeck and Reval managed such conflicts which often exceeded the formal limits of their own jurisdiction and authority. Through a comparative study of two towns with markedly different access to political power and networks, this book analyses the scope of diplomatic action available to city councils. By placing the diplomacy of municipal governments in the broader frame of European urban political thought and practice, it shows how magistrates combined a flexible conception of the common good with a pragmatic notion of reciprocity to balance their relations to their own citizenry and overlords, as well as to the Hanse and foreign rulers. Furthermore, this book zooms in on practices of diplomacy and processes of negotiation, uncovering the variety of strategies and tactics employed by the councils and their diplomats in written correspondence as well as face-to-face meetings at regional and Hanseatic diets.
