Summary Many of our oldest and best-loved stories are about killing guests and betraying hosts. Hospitality is celebrated, in medieval texts and in medieval studies, as a way of binding individuals together and strengthening social cohesion, but both the practice and narration of hospitality was shot through with ambiguity and ambivalence. This volume shifts the scholarly gaze from the high table - where kings, queens, and honoured guests are graciously served by skilled servants - to the shadowy corners of the hall, the places where gossip and complaint are exchanged, where outlaws hide under the guise of hospitality, where hostages and troublesome strangers are benched, where the light from the hall-fire reflects on drawn blades: prompting difficult reflections on the processes of extraction and predation that provided the material foundations for the feast. The chapters in Guests, Strangers, Aliens, Enemies range from Silk Road caravanserais in Armenia and crusader relations in the Latin East, through ambassadorial and papal receptions in the Mediterranean, treatment of merchants and the poor in Scandinavia, elite feasts in Latin Europe, to hosting of outlaws and hostages in Eurasia. The authors explore ambiguities of hospitality in the Middle Ages through a wide range of sources and methodological approaches. ---- PREMIERE EDITION FRANCAISE ---- BEL EXEMPLAIRE ---- "After three years at Jean, Wolff received the master's degree from Leipzig in 1702, becoming first a lecturer in mathematics and then, in 1706, professor of mathematics and natural science at the University of Halle. He was recommended for the latter post by Leibniz, with whom he had established a correspondence and whose philosophical ideas, although somewhat modified and vulgarized, subsequently became the cornestone of his own philosophical writings. At Halle, Wolff lectured on mathematics and algebra, building and fortification, as well as experimental and theoretical physics... Wolff was essentially a popularizer and (to some extend inspired by Leibniz) sought to effect a formal synthesis between Scholasticism, the new mathematical methods and more recent scientific conceptions. From Leibniz he also inherited the emphasis on certain philosophical ideas...". Summary This selected essays volume includes all of Wolfgang Schenkluhn's important works on the history of medieval church architecture. They reflect and evaluate the fundamentals of building analysis and focus on the relationship between innovation and reception in the choice of architectural forms. Some also discuss the time-related handling of historical objects, which raises the question of how to arrive at an adequate understanding of historical art and architecture. Great attention is paid to the theory of quotation, which has been in use since the 1970s. In the works, it is repeatedly placed in relation to the older theories of meaning and examined more closely. The author is one of the few architectural historians to have demonstrated and further developed the scientific value and the various possible applications of the quotation theory using concrete examples from medieval architecture. Thus the essays form a whole, in that the subjects dealt with combine factual, methodological and scientific-historical aspects. Civic group portraits, depicting trades and guilds, militias, magistrates, governors of charitable institutions and confraternities, were in the old duchy of Brabant during the Ancien Regime much better represented than is generally thought. Some hundred paintings are revealed, especially in the cities of Antwerp, Brussels, Leuven and Mechelen. For the first time, the book zooms in on this important subgenre of Flemish portraiture. The paintings present a wide variety of compositional types and integrated iconographic elements. Monumental life-size portraits coexist with small scale representations. At the same time, there is a clear differentiation in typology according to the city where they were produced. Along with the formal analysis, attention is paid to the material-technical genesis of these compositions, combining in some cases visual observation with scientific imagery and archival evidence. Also the question why patrons would order a group portrait, and how to interpret such ?corporate splendour?, is dealt with, making use of the richly collected contemporary documents, which permit to contextualize the portraits and, in some cases, reconstruct their original habitat. They thus shed light on a number of factors that were involved in the realization of Brabantine civic group portraits: the type of patrons and their socio-economic and political position; the immediate cause for ordering a group portrait; the artists called upon; the prices and terms of payment; and the destination ? (semi)public / private, sacral / secular ? of the paintings
