Summary The history of the Far North is tinged by dark fantasies. A remote location, harsh climate, a boundless and often mountainous wasteland, complex ethnic composition, and strange ways of life: all contributed to how the edge of Europe was misunderstood by outsiders. Since ancient times, the North has been considered as a place that exuded evil: it was the end of the world, the abode of monsters and supernatural beings, of magicians and sorcerers. It was Europe's last bastion of recalcitrant paganism. Many weird tales of the North even came from within the region itself, and when newly literate Scandinavians began to re-work their oral traditions into written form after 1100 AD, these myths of their past underlay newer legends and stories serving to support the development to Christian national monarchies. The essays in this volume engage closely with these stories, questioning how and why such traditions developed, and exploring their meaning. Through this approach, the volume also examines how historiographical traditions were shaped by authors pursuing agendas of nation-building and Christianization, at the same time that myths surrounding and originating among the multi-ethnic populations of the Far North continued to dominate the perception of the region and its people, and to define their place in Norwegian medieval history. Summary This collection of essays is the first to focus exclusively on the Wittelsbach court of Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria (1493-1550). The contributors argue for a deeper understanding of this duke's reign and acknowledge his crucial role in shaping the religious and cultural identity of the Duchy of Bavaria. By providing insights into the duke's cultural aspirations, the organisation of the court, musical sources, religious musical practice, and everyday working life, this book aims to: (1) situate the court of Wilhelm IV in the context of the religious and political upheavals of the early sixteenth century; (2) trace the development of the musical repertoire and personnel of the Bavarian court chapel between 1500 and 1550; and (3) critically assess the degree to which the Munich court could be considered 'modern' by re-evaluating the broader cultural, religious, and musical life of the court around 1520. The volume thus sheds light on the cultural ambitions of a duke who defined music and art as expressions of strategic elements that interwove tradition, devotion, and representation in a programme of governance based on humanist education-a duke whose foresight enabled the Munich court to quickly become one of the most prestigious and famous seats of power in the Holy Roman Empire. Summary Until now, scholars have had an inadequate picture of the scope and transmission of the oeuvre of Ludwig Senfl (c.1490-1543), one of the most important Renaissance composers of the German-speaking lands. The current publication presents an extraordinary and exceptionally comprehensive catalogue raisonn for this Renaissance composer. The Senfl Catalogue serves as an encyclopaedic research tool for further scholarly investigation: it not only presents a lively and coherent picture of Senfl's oeuvre, but also helps to explore the broader musical culture of his time. At the same time, the in-depth presentation and analysis of Senfl's music provides Early Music performers with new information on repertory that adds to the soundscape of the Renaissance. Volume 1 of the two-volume set forms the catalogue of works (including lost and misattributed compositions). It is organized according to genre and provides a thorough description of every composition. Each entry includes a musical incipit, comments on the musical structure, and comprehensive information concerning the transmission and the authenticity of the composition in addition to many other details. In its layout, structure, and critical approach to Senfl's music, this volume enables far-reaching research into the composer's style as well as a detailed characterisation of his oeuvre, and thus it provides clues towards a long-desired chronology of the composer's works. The Senfl Catalogue serves as an encyclopaedic research tool for further scholarly investigation: it not only presents a lively and coherent picture of Senfl's oeuvre, but also helps to explore the broader musical culture of his time.

Summary 'Rewriting' as the reworking of narrative material based on conscious strategies of composition plays a significant role in much of the Latin poetry of Late Antiquity. This book, resulting from the conference Riscritture poetiche nell'Occidente latino tra tarda antichit e medioevo, which was held on 9-11 May 2022 at the Department of Human Sciences (DSU) of the University of L'Aquila, looks at the range of practices and purposes that inform this procedure, with particular regard to the processes of transcodification enacted - in different historical and cultural contexts - by the recasting of authoritative prose texts into a classicising poetic idiom. The contributions present a multifaceted approach to rewriting, cover a variety of authors, genres, and texts, and cast a glance also at medieval Latin literature. In short, the essays in this collection, by reflecting on the interpretative contribution of the critical category of 'rewriting', not only add further tesserae to the mosaic of literary studies on Late Latinity, they also invite to grasp the difference between secular and Christian rewritings. Summary In the present day, the term 'idol' is often associated with a personality cult, but it still contains traces of its ancient meaning, namely above all the idea of worship. But this exactly creates a problem for the faith in God attested in the Old Testament. Worship and imagery obviously contradict the Old Testament commandment of worshipping the God of Israel without any image. This study fills a gap in the research in theological and religious studies by systematically exploring the various uses and connotations of the term eid lon. The starting point is an examination of the use of eid lon in Greek literature and in Egyptian sources from the Hellenistic period. The main part of the work is devoted to the various connotations of the term that later find their way into the Septuagint, the Greek Bible. There, as well as in later Jewish-Hellenistic literature, eid lon becomes the terminus technicus for the pictorial representation of deities.

Nice copy for this off-print with a handwritten accompanying cardboard sent to Dr. Jacques Lacroix. J.-L. Steinberg was a founding father of radioastronmy in France. His friend, J. Lacroix, had prepared a Ph.D (Univ. of Paris) under his leadership, in the early 60s. They worked together on experiences in the field of radioastronomy that were performed in the year 1964-1966 with "Rubis" rockets. These rockets, which were the fist 100% French expandable launch system, were launched from French-owned Hammaguir launch site, in Western Sahara. In the accompanying card, J.-L. Steinberg briefly explained that this publication was a summary of his career as a scientist. This text is an impressive and very interesting overview on his own life, by a man who was a survivor of nazis camps (most of his family was murdered in Auschwitz or on the way to Dora).
