‎Summary Judith of West Francia is one of the most enigmatic of Charlemagne's early descendants. The daughter of the king of West Francia and future emperor Charles the Bald and his wife Ermentrude, she was one of only a handful of Carolingian princesses who were destined for marriage. Over the course of her teenage years she married two successive kings of Wessex, became the first consecrated queen of England, was widowed twice, returned to Francia with an immense dowry, and sparked a major diplomatic incident when she eloped with a nobleman from Flanders called Baldwin. Eventually she married Baldwin in early 864, and together they established the dynasty of the counts of Flanders. In doing so the couple laid the groundwork for what would become one of the mightiest and most prestigious territorial principalities in north-western Europe in the tenth and eleventh centuries. But even in the tenth century, exceedingly few written memories of Judith's life survived. This explains why she was never the subject of a biography in the medieval or early modern eras, and why scholarship's understanding of her life and legacy remains highly fragmented. ‎Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present The Sprawl, the fourth solo exhibition of Ed Templeton in the gallery. In this exhibition Templeton presents a new series of paintings, alongside photographs, drawings, and sculptures. The word sprawl is often coupled with the word urban or suburban, as in "suburban sprawl" which refers to the spreading of houses, apartments, office buildings and shopping centers on undeveloped land surrounding a densely populated city. Essentially, it is unrestricted growth over large expanses of land, with little concern for urban planning. Ed Templeton lives in one of these suburbs, Huntington Beach, which is part of the urban sprawl surrounding the cities of Long Beach and Los Angeles. As Templeton explains: ?It takes one hour of driving from LA to my house and it's non-stop cement and asphalt - continuous development.? Part of what drove this expansion in the 1950s and 60s was called "white flight" - a term used to describe the mass migration of white people from cities to more distant suburbs as a response to the growing racial and ethnic diversity in urban areas post-desegregation. This is a sub-narrative setting a contextual framework for the specific mixture of modern beach culture and suburban sprawl that Templeton depicts in his work. The beach and the pier are popular places and bring together the religious zealots, surfers, and tourists alike. The endless blocks of tract housing surrounded by walls are ubiquitous in this area. These walls act like a theater backdrop in these new paintings. ‎Berlinde De Bruyckere (Ghent, 1964) has been a leading light in the international contemporary art world for many years already. Her raw, intriguing sculptures, installations and drawings draw strength from vulnerability and tenderness in the face of relentlessness. This exhibition catalogue shows her taking new steps on her artistic path, in search of the meaning of humanity, physicality, suffering and vitality. The themes in De Bruyckere's work have a universal and timeless value. But they gain extra urgency in times when, prompted by an unknown pandemic, the need for human connection is greater than ever, while at the same time the body has become a danger to mankind. De Bruyckere's compelling sculptures have a long and complex creative history. Much of her work is constructed of wax, resin, rope, skins and canvas, which she sometimes exposes to the elements for years before incorporating them into her art. Despite their confronting character the sculptures cry out to be touched and stroked, and exude warmth and the tangibility of existence. It is this powerful resonance that has made De Bruyckere one of the most important West European artists, ever since the early days of her career. Her oeuvre has been honoured by solo exhibitions all over the world. She has received several awards and has participated twice in the Venetian Biennale: in 2003 in the main pavilion, and in 2013 when she represented Belgium, in collaboration with Nobel Prize winner J.M. De Bruyckere staat al jaren aan de internationale top van de hedendaagse kunst. Haar rauwe, indringende sculpturen, installaties en tekeningen vinden kracht in kwetsbaarheid en tederheid in het meedogenloze. In deze tentoonstelling zet ze nieuwe stappen op haar artistieke pad, zoekende naar de betekenis van menselijkheid, lichamelijkheid, lijden en levenskracht. De thema's in het werk van De Bruyckere hebben een universele en onophoudelijke waarde. Maar ze krijgen een extra urgentie in een tijd waarin, aangezet door een ongekende pandemie, de behoefte aan menselijke connectie groter dan ooit is, terwijl het lichaam tegelijkertijd een gevaar voor de mens is geworden. De Bruyckeres indringende sculpturen kennen een lange, ingewikkelde maakgeschiedenis. Veel van haar werk is opgebouwd uit was, hars, touw en huiden of doeken, die ze soms jaren blootstelt aan de elementen alvorens ze te verwerken. Volgens Berlinde zorgt een engel met zijn warme, donkere vleugels voor beschutting, een toevluchtsoord tegen angst. Het is een prachtig voorbeeld van de fragiele lijn die De Bruyckere bewandelt tussen artistieke dichterlijkheid en engagement met de actualiteit. De tentoonstelling Engelenkeel is samengesteld met recent werk uit de periode 2014 tot heden.
