The literature of the late middle ages provides the main focus for this collection of eighteen essays, which engage with the tight interweavings of poetry, book production, and politics at a time when all three were in a state of flux. Primarily covering the period from Richard II to Mary Tudor, the essays explore such topics as medieval guides to Ovid, aspects of late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century book history, and the major court poets of the Ricardian period, Chaucer and Gower.

Summary The commercial manuscript book-trade in Paris, that had begun as early as the mid-12th century, was severely disrupted by the arrival of the first printing presses in Paris around 1475. This new invention converted a traditional system of book production that had developed and flourished over the centuries from a handcraft to the mechanical printing press. It was a change that affected not only the livelihood of those who wrote the books and the artists who decorated them, but also the social life of the whole workforce involved in the production of books. This publication traces the activities to which 16th- and 17th-century book artisans had to turn, faced as they were with a dwindling market for manuscripts. Those most affected were the illuminators and scribes who now had to seek alternative ways of making a living and so devise strategems for finding employment in other trades that would benefit from their skills. Thus the reader will discover well-known artists and illuminators finding jobs like adding illustrations to printed books, colouring wood-block prints and designing patterns and motifs for embroideries, tapestries and even glass and metal objects. A most interesting opportunity for illuminators was to get involved with the decorating of fans, a new fashion promoted late in the 17th century by the Sun King Louis XIV himself. In addition to the richly illustrated text, the volume also includes a Register of more than 500 named Illuminators in alphabetical order, giving also their affiliation to their alternative trades and listing personal details including family members and professional associates. The authors Richard and Mary Rouse, who are already widely known for their thorough research into the medieval book trade in Paris with their volume Manuscripts and their Makers, published a similar biographical Register of documented book producers up to the year 1500. With the present publication they are able to reconstruct how much the younger members and relatives of whole families of previous manuscript illuminators were able to continue to contribute to the now newly developing book-trade. This volume is therefore not only a contribution to the history of art and that of the book, but also provides a vivid glimpse into the social history of the period. Kern goes continental: Real girls in real settings around the world The internet video site VBS, launched by the ironic and ultra-cool American magazine Vice, features original content on a wide range of subjects dear to the hipster heart. One of the first, and still the most popular, ongoing series was "Shot by Kern," a concept dreamed up by then editor-in-chief Jesse Pearson to roust photographer Richard Kern from his New York environs and have him shoot women Kern-style around the world. In the last seven years Kern has traveled to Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States with a Vice video crew. Fans follow his adventures on Vice.com, from interviewing the real women who dream of being New York Girls, through styling and shooting. What they don?t see, what no one has ever seen, are the photos that result from these video sessions. Shot By Kern presents some 300 of these photographs for the first time. Those who?ve followed Kern?s adventures on VBS will be especially eager to lay their hands on this book, but all fans will enjoy these fresh-scrubbed amateurs in their first time before the camera. Some are shy, some are brazen, but all have that quirky cuteness Kern seeks in his subjects. The book includes several photo series. As Richard travels the world he?s noticed cultural similarities between his models and themes have emerged, from the universality of prescription drugs, to a love of technology, to lying in bed, and peering up skirts. And because Kern has always been fascinated by what women do behind the bathroom door, there is lots of intimate personal grooming. As with Kern?s last TASCHEN book, Action, Shot By Kern comes with an hour long video, shot and edited by Kern, with original music by Sonic Youth?s Thurston Moore, because, like Kern?s models, the modern world is always in motion. Text in English, French, and German About the Authors Richard Kern was born in North Carolina in 1954 and has lived and worked in New York City since 1979. In the '80s he produced a series of short films that are now recognized as the central works of the movement known as the Cinema of Transgression. In the '90s he switched to still photography full time. Since 2000 he has primarily devoted himself to gallery shows and, beginning in 2005, to his VBS video series "Shot By Kern." Dian Hanson produced a variety of men?s magazines from 1976 to 2001, including Juggs, Outlaw Biker and Leg Show, before becoming TASCHEN?s Sexy Book editor. Her 60+ books for TASCHEN include The Art of Pin-up and Psychedelic Sex. She lives in Los Angeles.

Home to some of the most remarkable spaces in contemporary culture, the cinema of David Lynch demonstrates an acute awareness of architecture. From the urban wastelands of Eraserhead to the eerie Red Room in Twin Peaks, Lynch's architecture is anxious, absurd and utterly distinct. Contemporary architects such as Peter Eisenman, Gehry and Nouvel have responded to these spaces in fascinating ways. This book is the first sustained critical assessment of the role architecture and design play in Lynch's films.

This revelatory catalogue delves into the many affinities shared between two widely renowned and discussed artists, Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) and Edvard Munch (1863-1944), whose intensely studied work has, until now, never been considered in relation to one another. Mapplethorpe + Munch brings to light how these two monumental figures curiously relate on an existential level, in how they deal with questions concerning sexuality, and in their way of utilizing self-portraiture as a means to explore issues of personal identity . Featuring essays that examine the thematic impulses behind the accompanying exhibition, this publication establishes a previously unexplored association between two equally contentious art figures, while working to impart alternative perspectives and new insight into their respective outputs. Although distinct in their legacies, Mapplethorpe and Munch remain remarkably intertwined.
