‎Matthieu Ronsse (1981) is een Belgisch kunstenaar. Zijn schilderijen lijken vaak onafgewerkt en bevatten referenties naar oude meesters, fragmenten uit zijn priv leven of knipsels uit fotografie- en architectuurboeken. Vaak scheurt hij de werken, of snijdt hij ze in stukken; soms laat hij ze zelfs door regen en wind verweren. Ronsse gaat een confrontatie met de schilderkunst aan en stelt al haar kwaliteiten in vraag ? materialen, technieken, onderwerpen en geschiedenis. Het boek A Procession of Lobsters geeft een overzicht van het werk dat Matthieu Ronsse in situ maakte: in een tankstation in Oudenaarde, in de villa van een verzamelaar, in een cateringbedrijf, in wachttorens en kubussen. ‎Reclining Fragments, Ritsart Gobyn's second book is the sequel to In Between and, as if by some miracle, thus completes the sentence: 'In Between Reclining Fragments'. Where In Between still hesitated between indicating place or time, the complete sentence 'In Between Reclining Fragments' seems to indicate a place: somewhere between reclining fragments. But in the conversation between Ritsart and Maarten Inghels - the author of the text accompanying the book - it is again emphatically about time: "'As you move closer and distance yourself again, a passage of time is created,' you said. 'That back-and-forth movement of your perception makes it interesting.'" The book forms the second volume on the artist's work and contains almost all the works the artist made from late 2020 to mid-2023, including the room views of 'Prologue', the exhibition at PLUS-ONE gallery, where the book will be introduced. Consistently, Ritsart continues to build an evocative and tactile oeuvre in which he increasingly challenges the viewer's perception and causes the gaze to slow down. More than in the first book - with works from 2017 to 2020 - the artist incorporates fragments/citations of other artists into his paintings, raising the question of what motivations preceded that choice. Does Ritsart neutralise the works of grandmasters by painting them alongside tape, paper scraps and dirty footprints, or does he instead pay homage to his pictorial heroes? ‎Photographic images can, apart from their capacity to show, convey an experience, a quality that has seldom been recognized. In this book the artist and photographer Maarten Vanvolsem explains how the strip technique can tell a different story of time and space in photographic images, a story that leads to new expressions and experiences of time and movement. The strip technique itself seems to be neglected in the debate on time and photography, although it has a long history. Its use is widespread and, especially in recent years, more and more artists rediscover the technique. Based on an historical overview, a knowledge and understanding of the technique, and experiments with the building of cameras, this book will propose a new use of this forgotten art: a use in which the temporal terms ?speed', ?rhythm', and ?pace' are of more value than terms so often associated with photography such as ?freeze', ?split second', or ?capture'. Within the book one can find more than thirty artists using the strip technique for their artistic practice. A lot of the artwork produced goes beyond traditional photography and the standards set by the photo industry. The research also reveals the extent to which artists use the technique to rediscover the time-based possibilities of the photographic image. ‎
