Summary In a seminal essay Carl Dahlhaus has pointed out that often it is possible to turn the ending in a different direction without making any difference to the substance of the tragic course of events leading to it . Dahlhaus' statement is especially relevant to Italian Romantic opera seria. Whereas Lieto fine was central to the ethics of eighteenth-century Enlightenment opera, Romantic opera turned to heartbreaking tragic endings, often as means of social and political criticism. Yet the ending of a Romantic opera was not inevitable, and a significant proportion of Romantic operas have Lieto fine. An example is Rossini's Tancredi that was premiered in 1813 first with Lieto fine (Venice), then with a tragic ending (Ferrara), and again with Lieto fine (Milan), suggesting that the ending was not essential to the opera. The book analyzes the processes leading to Lieto fine in 23 operas from Tancredi to Puccini's La Fanciulla del West . This includes mixed endings, such as in Verdi's Macbeth that ends with a hymn of victory, yet centers on the human tragedy of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The book discusses both canonic and unjustly neglected operas, such as the socialist Papa Martin by Antonio Cagnoni.

Summary The Glossa ordinaria was the main exegetical instrument by which the Bible was taught and studied during the Middle Ages, a resource whose influence began in the early twelfth and remained perceptible in theological writing beyond the sixteenth century. For much of its modern history, the sheer scale, range, and ubiquity of the Glossa has deterred scholars from sustained study of its origins and development, its reception. Summary The employment of civic musicians was a practice in most European countries in early modern Europe, all the way from London and Venice to small Danish towns. This study's objective is to lay out which kinds of civic musicians (stadsmusikanter) Denmark had, and to examine what that came to signify for musicians and music, as there has not been a study in depth of civic musicians' employment in Denmark until now. It has been a particular objective of this study to illuminate the Danish situation in relation to some other European countries. Compared to Germany, the civic music system in the kingdom of Denmark developed some clear characteristics in the period 1660-1800 because it had to fulfil the requirements of both the absolute monarchy and the municipal authorities. It is particularly interesting that the system was regulated by royal licenses which applied across both towns and the countryside. The book's first main section goes through the background to the absolute monarchy's civic music system, including the conditions of employment. The second main section shows what the social consequences of the Danish system were for both licensed and unlicensed musicians. The third section is about the instruments and the music. We find examples of the entire repertoire of the Danish civic musicians, from ambitious artistic ensemble music to virtuoso solo sonatas with continuo and single part music for everyday use. The civic musicians exercised a marked influence on the unlicensed players in villages. One can speak of a cultural battle between the professional civic musicians' music and the traditions of the country fiddlers. Civic musicians in Denmark had international contacts with colleagues and played a prolific role as promoters of music.

Jeroen Laureyns voorwoord/artstory 4: Hans Bruyneel Op woensdag 10 september 2014 wandelde ik voor de tweede keer van thuis in Antwerpen Noord naar het atelier van Hans Bruyneel in Borgerhout, dwars door de stenen woestijn van Antwerpen. Ik verbaas mij elke keer over de volledige verstening van de binnenstad die als een vallei van dakpannen, baksteen, beton en asfalt van nok tot nok doorloopt, maar waarin ik mij nog altijd, vreemd genoeg, het meeste thuis voel. Steek mij niet in het pseudo-platteland van Vlaanderen, daar zou de confrontatie met de aanval die de Vlamingen op hun eigen natuurlijke leefomgeving hebben ingezet, te groot zijn. Neen, dan liever nog de stenen woestijn van een Belgische binnenstad met haar charmante herenhuizen en verlaten fabriekjes dan de maisvelden, steenwegen en verkavelingen waar geen bij of vlinder vrolijk van wordt. Het is daar, in die Antwerpse binnenstad, dat ik in het midden van het tweede decennium van de 21ste eeuw aan de poort van een oude diamantslijperij aanbel en het atelier van de schilder Hans Bruyneel binnenstap, waar hij de laatste jaren gewerkt heeft aan grote, filmische natuurlijke landschappen in felle kleuren, die op het eerste gezicht geen groter contrast kunnen vormen met het claustrofobische stedelijke en natuurarme landschap van de buitenwereld. Alsof de kunstenaar hier in zijn atelier, in het midden van een van de meest vervuilde, lawaaierige en versnipperde landschappen van Europa aan het acute gebrek aan open ruimte en natuur wil ontsnappen door in de voetsporen van de Amerikaanse romantische landschapsschilders, zoals Albert Bierstadt, een verheven natuur te schilderen in de kleurenpracht van een spectaculaire zonsondergang en waarin de mens als een figurant een bijrolletje speelt en de hoofdrol aan de natuur overlaat. Maar zo eenvoudig is het natuurlijk niet, want in plaats van schilderijen die de schoonheid van het landschap willen bezingen, zijn ook deze doeken projecties van een artificiele en dreigende wereld, waarin de schilder de toeschouwer vol argwaan aan de rand van het beeld laat plaatsnemen en hem niet met een weids gebaar uitnodigt om denkbeeldig in die landschappen rond te wandelen. In het interview dat Marc Holthof van de schilder afnam, vertelt de schilder hoe ook hij, net zoals de meeste van zijn 21ste eeuwse tijdgenoten, niet de positie van de 19de eeuwse ?pleinairist? inneemt die zich met zijn ezel midden in het landschap plaatste. Wel integendeel, ook hij maakt deel uit van een generatie hedendaagse kunstenaars, die zich nadrukkelijk na ?het einde van het lyrische landschap? (Ton Lemaire) situeren: ?Ik ben niet echt een landschapsschilder?, vertelt Bruyneel, ?ik probeer ? zoals je in de 19de eeuw vaak ziet ? niet door de potigheid van mijn borstelstreek de energie van het landschap of de zee of de luchten weer te geven. Dat doe ik allemaal niet.? Het zijn met andere woorden geen echte landschappen, maar artificiele schermen, beelden van landschappen die op een doek verschijnen. Filmische fantasieen. Droomlandschappen die Arcadie al lang achter zich hebben gelaten en helemaal ?post-nature? zijn: de band met elke fysieke werkelijkheid is doorgesneden, het geprojecteerde landschap beschenen met een giftig licht dat niet langer van de zon komt, maar van prachtige, door ons gefabriceerde gifgaswolken. Schoon genoeg om er nog een laatste keer in alle eenzaamheid in rond te waren en afscheid te nemen, maar zeker niet leefbaar of van een droom vervuld die het ecologisch ontij nog zou kunnen keren. Misschien schildert Hans Bruyneel wel het theatrale einde van het landschap waarin BASF de spotlichten bedient.

In het afgelopen decennium stond de hebzucht in het middelpunt van de belangstelling. Alom werd zij beschouwd als de oorzaak van de financiele ineenstorting en de economische crisis die daarop volgde. Toch moest ze tegelijk haar nut bewijzen en de kwakkelende economie uit het slop trekken. Hebzucht was de oorzaak van de ziekte, maar ook het medicijn. Deze curieuze ambiguiteit heeft ontegenzeglijk historische wortels. In de afgelopen duizend jaar is de kritiek op het kwaad van de hebzucht nooit verstomd, maar geleidelijk kwam er wel meer oog voor de nuttige werking ervan.
