The visual effects of light, color and movement have been at the heart of Yves Ullens?s work for over 20 years. In order to make visible the fleeting moment of optical phenomena, the Belgian artist uses photography and explores visual perception not perceptible to the naked eye. The vibration of colors and lines is the result of the movement of his camera. The energy of this movement is directly captured by the camera and then fixed on the photographic print without further intervention. His artistic vocation was revealed following the unexpected outcome of a photo taken during a stay abroad. An accidental blur awakened his innate sense of abstraction and interested him in the effects of reflections of light. This photograph marked the beginning of his own style, going beyond the conventions and rules of traditional photography. Yves Ullens' abstract photographs are visual experiences linked to color and light. They remind us of the works of one of the Bauhaus masters, L szl Moholy-Nagy, who "used light as a formal primary factor, creating space and movement, and eliminating the central perspective of photography". Painting and photography are in constant dialogue in the work of Yves Ullens. He sees photography like a painter and uses his camera like a brush. He explores a free expression of shapes and colors as the abstract artists of the 20th century did with painting. Colors that the Belgian artist draws from the palette of details in his daily environment.

Summary Many new and exciting kinds of popular song emerged in the 19th century, and the contributors to this volume place the development and reception of these songs in their social and cultural context. The chapters are grouped into four parts. Part I investigates border crossings: an internationally known gondola song, popular songs in the Southern United States, the impact of American music in Germany, and Brazilian music in Europe. Part II concentrates on public and private spaces: the cabarets of Montmartre, salons in Berlin and Prague, popular songs and the church organ, and theatre songs in Portugal and Spain. Part III takes up the subject of social struggle: German protest songs, Hussitism and Czech songs, and Antebellum American popular songs. Part IV is concerned with matters of cultural identity: songs of Flanders, songs of the Russian 'Slavic spirit', urban songs in Greece after the War of Independence (1821), and rural and urban Serbian songs. Taken as a whole, the chapters reveal the importance of understanding different historical and cultural environments when investigating the subject matter, structure and meaning of 19th-century popular song.

The Arenberg lineage belongs to the high nobility, whose estates, interests and familial connections have traditionally extended across borders. Through their prominent military role in European conflicts, the Arenbergs derived power, prowess and prestige. Their princely and ducal standing was equally reflected in the highly superior quality of their art collection, as they commissioned works from contemporaries such as Rubens, Van Dyck, and later Watteau. In the nineteenth century, the Duke of Arenberg?s newly established gallery in his palace in Brussels was renowned for its Flemish and Dutch masters, such as Brueghel and Jordaens, Rembrandt and Vermeer, and was explicitly recommended as a private museum in travel guides of the time: Vaut le voyage! This exceptional collection is also indicative of the practice of collecting art and promoting artists which has long been an integral part of the culture of nobility.
