A beautiful art book accompanying the major autumn exhibition on Cobra artist Constant. There is increasing international attention for Constant, comparable to the growing popularity of Mondrian. We want to show New Babylon as much as possible worldwide, so that it continues to inspire young urban planners, architects, economists, and political leaders. Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005) depicted his ideas about a new kind of human being (homo ludens), society, and architecture in one of the most visionary and extensive projects in post-war art history: New Babylon. He would work on it for almost twenty years, until 1974. To this day, his global city of the future remains a source of inspiration for many visual artists, thinkers, and architects, including Rem Koolhaas. This book not only highlights the versatility of the project itself, but also shows the various steps that led Constant from his Cobra period to this central project in his oeuvre. Beautiful models, drawings, maps, paintings, watercolors, and collages are interspersed with photographs, sketches, and other finds from his archive. Experiments such as the Ludieke trap (Playful Staircase) and the Deurenlabyrinth (Door Labyrinth) are also discussed, providing a complete picture of an extremely dynamic artist. With texts by Constant himself and contributions by Laura Stamps, Willemijn Stokvis, Mark Wigley, Pascal Gielen, Rem Koolhaas, and Trudy van der Horst. The book accompanying the major retrospective exhibition of Constant's work at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, from May 28 to September 25, 2016.

Summary In the twelfth century, a widely circulated hypothesis about the descendants of St Anne, mother of the Virgin, included the idea that Salome, the mother of the disciples James and John, was in fact a man and St Anne's third husband. Two scholars mounted a challenge: Maurice of Kirkham, prior of the Augustinian abbey of Kirkham in Yorkshire; and Herbert of Bosham, a former student of Peter Lombard and a companion of Thomas Becket. Both men employed scholastic methods of enquiry and knowledge of Hebrew; both decried the acceptance of a flawed hypothesis about the genealogy of the Virgin as symbolic of an uncritical acceptance of scholastic authorities with the potential to distort comprehension of the Gospels. This volume provides the first edition and translation of Maurice's Contra Salomitas, in both its short and long versions. It also provides an edition and translation of Herbert's letter to Henry, count of Champagne. A substantial introduction outlines the long evolution of the debate about the kin of Jesus, and situates Maurice and Herbert in the context of their twelfth-century scholastic milieu.
