Il étudia à l'université de Goettingue sous Haller, exerça quelque temps la médecine à Berne, puis dans son lieu natal, où il vécut retiré pendant 14 ans. C'est dans cette retraite qu'il composa son livre De la solitude (1756), oeuvre d'un esprit triste et chagrin...Ce traité eut un prodigieux succès en Allemagne et en Angleterre...
