‎Summary Although 'Otherness' is an extremely common phenomenon in every society, related research is still at its beginnings. 'Otherness' in the Middle Ages is a versatile and complex theme that covers a great number of different aspects, facets, and approaches: from non-human monsters and cultural strangers from remote places up to foreigners from another country or another town; it can refer to ethnic, cultural, political, social, sexual, or religious 'Otherness', inside or outside one's own community. In any case, however, 'Otherness' is a subjective phenomenon depending on personal views and ascriptions, an issue of 'imagination' and experience rather than 'reality'. There is neither one single model of alterity nor is 'Otherness' a stable phenomenon, but it changes over time and according to the cultural context. All this calls for methodological reflection and needs thorough investigation. The methodological introduction and the 18 contributions of this volume demonstrate the great diversity of the theme and its different manifestations and perspectives. They tackle the problem from distinct angles and disciplines (history, art history, archaeology, literary history, and philology) in a wide chronological and thematic frame, using different methodological approaches, dealing with different areas (from Northern and Southern Europe to Byzantium and India), perspectives (including law, social order, the past, a sea), and diverse kinds of sources. They examine all kinds of 'Otherness' mentioned above, highlight demarcation and rejection, aversion or acceptance, assimilation and integration, thus relativizing a strict dichotomy between 'the Self' and 'the Other' or between inside and outside. ‎L'auteur (1927-2001) est un anthropologue américain renommé pour ses travaux sur le matérialisme culturel. Ses études ethnologiques sur les populations de la Bahia amazonienne et d'autres régions du Brésil ainsi que du Mozambique portent sur le concept de culture. Il était directeur du département d'anthropologie à l'Université Columbia à New York. — "«Vaches, cochons, guerres et sorcières», et en fait bien d'autres, dont les adeptes du culte du Cargo et Jésus-Christ soi-même, constituent le sujet d'un livre-limite, celui qu'il est permis d'écrire en donnant un déploiement maximum au principe d'après lequel, en dernière instance, tout phénomène humain relève d'une explication très simple. Marvin Harris pousse à l'extrême un principe qui, d'une certaine façon, sous-tend l'ensemble de l'empirisme anglo-saxon. Les heurts ne datent pas d'aujourd'hui entre les tenants de ce courant et ceux qui, au contraire, dans la tradition philosophique «continentale», professent que tout phénomène humain relève d'une explication très complexe. Pour Harris, tout fait social trouve sa justification dans sa simple existence. Une existence ponctuelle ne suffit cependant pas : il faut perdurer. Ce qui a disparu (le zélotisme palestinien, par exemple) ou n'a jamais eu lieu (l'élevage du porc en Palestine) était ou aurait été non adaptatif ; au contraire, ce qui tient ou a tenu pour un temps est ou était adaptatif, aussi extravagant que cela puisse paraître quelquefois. Ainsi pour les vaches sacrées des Indiens : «L'amour des vaches et son cortège de symboles sacrés et de doctrines saintes protègent le fermier contre un calcul qui ne serait «rationnel» qu'à court terme» (p. 21). (...) Comme on peut s'en douter, un type d'interprétation, qui paraît ingénieux quand il s'agit d'expliquer les particularités d'un certain mode d'élevage de bovins ou de porcins, semble de moins en moins convaincant – ou franchement farfelu – quand il veut rendre compte de faits qui s'éloignent de plus en plus des processus primaires de production, par exemple la réussite du christianisme, la chasse aux sorcières ou le succès de librairie de Castaneda..." ‎"C’est à un sujet fort délicat, ainsi qu’il est d’ailleurs précisé dès les premières pages, auquel s’attaquent l’anthropologue Robert Hazel et le spécialiste de la culture somalie, Mohamed Mohamed-Abdi. L’objectif de cet ouvrage volumineux est à la fois de rendre compte du sens de la coutume de l’infibulation et de réaliser un travail de démystification à son encontre. L’infibulation est « une obstruction vulvaire chirurgicale avec clitoridectomie nécessitant une intervention libératrice ultérieure réalisée au moment du mariage », indique le médecin et ethnopsychiatre Erlich (p. 43), soit « la quasi-obturation des organes génitaux externes de la femme » précisent les auteurs (p. 1). Ces derniers, qui ont débuté cette recherche (d’abord documentaire) en 1997, décryptent le discours social, en particulier somali, sur l’infibulation, et passent en revue les diverses explications qui ont été proposées par des chercheurs et des observateurs à la fois africains et occidentaux. (...) il faut reconnaître l’ampleur et la richesse des données réunies par les auteurs ainsi que leur traitement analytique. L’ouvrage intéressera tous ceux qui souhaitent comprendre les pratiques de mutilations génitales féminines en Afrique, et plus largement les spécialistes du corps en sciences humaines et les chercheurs qui s’intéressent aux questions de morale et d’éthique." (Cécile Campergue, Anthropologie et Sociétés, 2009) — Ce livre aborde sans a priori un sujet controversé : les « mutilations génitales féminines » en Afrique. Conjuguant l’ethnographie, l’analyse culturelle, l’anthropologie comparative et intégrant des données linguistiques et historiques, il porte avant tout sur l’infibulation, la forme la plus « cruelle » de mutilation génitale féminine. Aucun des aspects de la question : effets sur la vie reproductive et le bien-être psychologique, assises culturelles, etc., n’est négligé. En Occident, l'infibulation passe pour un « crime contre la femme ». Ce jugement expéditif va à l’encontre de l’expérience des femmes somali et autres, celles-là même qui sont porteuses du mystère de cette pratique. Cette pratique faisait partie des choses auxquelles on croyait, qu’on faisait et dont on parlait peu. Les représentations masculines s’écartaient d’ailleurs assez de ce qu’en disaient les femmes. Comme cette pratique ancienne relève de l’univers séparé des femmes, il vaut mieux se fier à leurs intuitions. On constate ainsi qu’infibulation rime avec fécondité. Sans la conviction d’un gain de fertilité, jamais des générations de femmes ne se seraient infligé de tels tourments. La mise en évidence et l’élucidation des liens culturellement établis dans la Corne de l’Afrique entre infibulation et fécondité constituent le coeur de cet ouvrage. Cet effort d’explication scientifique devrait faciliter le travail social de démystification dans les communautés concernées. ‎
