Pp. 1-118 a. 2 folded engraved plates. Cavendish's paper: pp. 1-62. (the torsion balance of Michell shown on the plates).‎

‎First German edition of Cavendish's famous paper in which he calculated the weight of the earth and determined its mass. He also, as the first, observed gravitational motion of minute portions of matter. He estimates the earth's mass to 6,6 x 10 to the potential of 24 kg. The original paper ""Experiments to determine the Density of the Earth"" appeared in Philosophical Transaction, 1798.""Cavendish published five papers between 1784 and 1809...With one exception they were comparatively minor productions....The exception was his determination of the density of the earth or weighing of the world in 1798, by means of John Michell's torsion balance. The apparatus consisted of two lead balls on either end of a suspended beam" these movable balls were attracted by a pair of stationary lead balls. Cavendish calculated the the force of attraction between the balls fro the observed period of oscillation of the balance and deduced the density of the earth from the force. He found it to be 5.48 times that of water. Cavendish was the first to observe gravitational motions induced by comparatively minute portions of ordinary matter...By weighing the world he rendered the law of gravitation complete. The law was no longer a proportionally statement but a quantitatively exact one" this was the most importent addition to the science of gravitation since Newton.""(DSB III, p. 158.).‎

‎A survey of Victorian style and design, covering key movements and featuring seminal work by key designers - from Morris and de Morgan to Voysey and Mackintosh. The Victorian period (from 1837 to 1901) produced a wealth of innovative design. It was characterised by diversity and conflicting desires for tradition and progress which gave rise to a rich variety of styles such as revivals of Gothic and Rococo, a new fascination with the East in Japonisme and the appearance of Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts Movement. Elaborate designs for furniture by Pugin and Burges, or ceramics and silver by Mackintosh and Knox, are seen alongside actual pieces as they were eventually created, while a range of room designs reflect changing tastes in form and colour and different lifestyles.‎

‎ Un des deux exemplaires connus datés de 1755. Première édition française et rarissime PREMIER TIRAGE. La page de titre du premier volume est datée de 1755, celle du second, 1756, on ne connaît qu'un seul autre exemplaire daté de 1755 et une douzaine d'exemplaires portant 1756. Les exemplaires que l'on trouve de cet ouvrage portent habituellement la date de 1759. Daprès Cohen, ces exemplaires seraient une édition préliminaire distribuée en 1756. Mais pour Chambat et Varry, il est possible quune partie de louvrage ait été imprimée entre 1746 et 1747 et que les feuillets aient été conservés jusque vers 1756, date à laquelle avait été prévue la distribution. Cette sortie a ensuite été retardée à 1759 par la perte de planches et le travail de Clairaut, ou par dautres raisons inconnues. La préface de Cotes est présente. L' "Avertissement" est en premier état : le bandeau en tête de page est différent et on lit au bas de la page ii : "des ouvrages de Mr. Clairault, ou des cahiers qu'il donnait en forme de leçons à M. le Comte du Châtelet Lomont, fils de l'illustre Marquise". [2e tirage : "des cahiers qu'il avait anciennement donnés en forme de leçons à Madame la Marquise du Chastellet"] Autre différence p. iii : " M. Le Monnier a suffisament rempli cet objet dans ces éléments d'astronomie", [2e tirage : "M. l'abbé de la Caille a parfaitement rempli cet objet dans ses élémens d'astronomie, où il a beaucoup simplifié les opérations par lesquelles M. Newton avait enseigné à déterminer les orbites des comètes."] Emilie du Châtelet, amie intime de Voltaire, a par cette traduction annotée des "Principia" de Newton largement contribué à la diffusion des idées newtoniennes en France. Copies of this work usually bear the date 1759. This edition was presumably issued in a very small number of copies and then quickly withdrawn on account of its imperfections. The Cotes preface is present. First state of the "Avertissement". "Known throughout intellectual Europe as Emilie, the name popularized by Voltaire, Mme du Châtelet - beyond the influence she had for some fifteen years on the orientation of Voltaire's works and on his public activity - contributed to the vitality of French scientific life to the parallel diffusion of Newtonianism and Leibnizian epistemology.
