‎Between 1150 and 1400 Sweden was transformed from a society which was predominantly reliant on oral communication into a society which increasingly deployed writing. Latin, the traditional language of government and records, was gradually replaced by vernacular Swedish. The watershed moment in this process was the drafting of national and town laws in the 1350s, an event which established Swedish as the language of the judiciary and judicial records. From this period written documentation was gradually integrated into legal procedure.Pragmatic Literacy argues that the Crown, the expanding bureaucracy, the editing of the laws in Swedish, and the laws? demands for written documentation in everyday transactions were the main driving forces behind the development in medieval Sweden of lay literacy for practical purposes. The book demonstrates how the early use of writing by the royal administration and the writing of provincial laws in Swedish created ?centres of literacy? from which literate ways of thinking and acting spread both geographically and socially. It further illustrates how literacy moved beyond the confines of the clerical elite, by exploring how different members of the laity adopted pragmatic literacy for private purposes. Pragmatic Literacy thus traces the history of pragmatic literacy in Sweden through the lens of the judicial and administrative archive.‎

‎Summary By exploring communication and social practices employed during negotiations at the papal court, this volume sheds light on a wide range of sources for studying the high and late medieval papacy. Analyzing the terminology and practice of the 'stilus curiae' in documents from all parts of Europe, this volume puts forward a new understanding of negotiation and conflict resolution at the papal court in the Middle Ages. 'Stilus curiae' usually refers to the language and style of curial documents, and it is often used to describe the customary application of legal procedure in court practice. The authors of this volume, however, argue for a broader understanding of 'stilus curiae' as an umbrella term that encompasses all forms of communication and social practices used during negotiations at the papal court. This volume (the first of two) publishes the results of a research network funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Through analysis of the concept(s) of the 'stilus curiae', the chapters throw new light on a wide range of sources from the High and Late Middle Ages, including chronicles, biographic and polemic texts, as well as administrative sources, such as letters of petitioners and proctors, speeches, and financial records of ambassadors. Thus, the volume offers a new approach towards the papacy between 1100 and 1500. ‎Summary Charters and other administrative texts have long had the full attention of medievalists as primary sources in their historiographical work. This also applies to scholars from the Netherlands. Ever since the late Middle Ages, they recognised the value of these sources, included them as testimony in their historiography and gradually began to realise that charters and other documents required a specific form of textual criticism and a special way of editing. In this, Dutch historians usually followed developments abroad. Sometimes, as in the early seventeenth century, they were ahead methodologically, but for long periods they depended for new insights on developments elsewhere. This was especially true in the nineteenth century, when scientific diplomatic methods and editing techniques emerged which would only be introduced and applied in the Netherlands in the next century.
