‎La question des forces vitales occupe une place centrale dans les sciences de la vie allemandes a la fin du XVIIIe siecle. Alors que le mecanisme connait une periode de crise, un grand nombre de naturalistes et de medecins s?interrogent sur les causes des phenomenes vitaux et introduisent toute une serie de notions pour en rendre compte. De multiples problemes se posent alors: quel est la nature et le statut epistemologique de ces forces, comment integrer la dimension teleologique dans leur definition? Certains auteurs explorent egalement une voie de recherche voisine: ils tentent de denombrer les differentes forces vitales, de les delimiter precisement, de les mesurer chez les differents groupes d?etres vivants de maniere a etablir leur repartition dans la nature organique. Ils rencontrent ainsi l?un des autres grands questionnements naturalistes du moment, celui de la classification des especes. ‎Le biologiste C.H. Pander (1794-1865), balte de culture allemande, est connu pour avoir, le premier, enonce la theorie selon laquelle l'embryon se forme a partir de membranes simples, les feuillets germinaux. Cette conception, aujourd'hui encore, est a la base de toute l'embryologie descriptive. D'un point de vue historique, elle a joue un role tres important dans le triomphe de la theorie de l'epigenese, selon laquelle le nouvel individu n'est pas preforme dans l'oeuf mais se forme progressivement a partir de structures relativement simples et grossieres. En outre, cette vision d'une matiere organique en train de s'auto-organiser devait conduire Pander sur la voie du transformisme, theorie qu'il allait contribuer a developper au cours des annees 1820. C'est pourquoi les deux textes presentes ici revetent un interet tout particulier dans l'histoire de la biologie.Ils ont joui d'une grande renommee au cours du XIXe siecle. Par la suite, ils ont ete eclipses par les travaux remarquables du compatriote et ami de Pander, Karl Ernst von Baer, qui d'ailleurs n'a jamais manque de souligner tout ce qu'il devait a son predecesseur. Pour la premiere fois, ces textes sont rassembles, traduits (du latin et de l'allemand) et commentes.Ils sont accompagnes des belles figures gravees par le dessinateur d'Alton pour l'edition allemande. In 1818, together with James Stodart, a cutler, he began a series of experiments on the alloys of steel. Although he was able to produce alloys of superior quality, they were not capable of commercial production because they required the use of such rare metals as platinum, rhodium, and silver. Nevertheless, Faraday demonstrated that the increasingly urgent problem of producing higher-grade steel could be attacked by science.
