La théorie physique? Ce titre, qui fut au début de notre siècle celui d’un ouvrage controversé, suggère bien une question, celle de savoir si en matière de science la théorie doit se qualifier en fonction d’un domaine plus particulier d’application. L’auteur, Pierre Duhem, n’aurait pas hésité, semble-t-il, à répondre par l’affirmative en ce qui concerne le vaste champ de la recherche que l’on peut signifier sous le nom de physique. Son ouvrage est en fait construit comme une préparation rigoureuse à une telle réponse et bien que les années aient modifié considérablement le contexte du champ sus-dit, les analyses proposées ont été jugées suggestives par de nombreux épistémologues d’aujourd’hui. First apperance of this (their first) joint paper, which initiated the recheches leading, the year after, to the ""Law of Dulong and Petit"", the connection between atomic weight and atomic heat.""In 1815 Dulong’s famous collaboration with the mathematical physicist Alexis Thérèse Petit began"" it produced three important memoirs on heat (of which this is the first). The best-known part of this work is the statement of the law of constant atomic heats that bears their names, .... They began with the fundamental problem of measuring quantities of heat, which involved a critical analysis of thermometric scales. In 1804-1805 Gay-Lussac had carried out a comparison of mercury and air thermometers between 0°C. and 100°C. Dulong and Petit extended the range of comparison up to 300°C. and found an increasing discrepancy between the two scales at higher temperatures."" (DSB).

There he taught mathematics and physical science. In 1847, he was appointed to the chair of mathematics in the Faculty of Science in Rennes. His last post, from 1866, was as dean of the faculty there... Dupré's scientific career fell into two parts. In the first, which lasted from his years at the Ecole Normale until about 1859, he contributed to several branches of mathematics and physics... During the second period, which covered the remaining ten years of his life, Dupré concerned himself exclusively with the mechanical theory of heat, his main interest being the implications of the theory for matter on the molecular scale. This copy has belonged to James Dewar, Jacksonian professor of natural philosophy, Cambridge, 1875-1923 and Fullerian professor of Chemistry, Royal Institution - he invented cordite and the work bears his name.
