The uncommon second edition (Zweite Auflage) of Husserl's main work, one of the most important philosophical works of the 20th century. The ""Logical Investigations"" fundamentally changed philosophy and invoked the new philosophical era of the 20th century, -with this work Husserl founds phenomenology. Together with Heidegger's ""Sein und Zeit"" this must be considered the most important work of modern philosophy. The work was originally published 1900-1901, and the first edition is very difficult to come by. The second edition, which is enlarged and revised, is also not common.Husserl opens this fundamental work by attacking psychologism, and he then introduces his brand new philosophical method, which he had still by then not fully developed, but which came to influence all philosophy ever since -Phenomenology! Husserl himself calls this a ""Work of Breakthrough"" (see his preface to the second edition).In short, psychologism taught that logic itself was not an independent discipline, but a part of psychology, and it is this notion that Husserl gives its final blow in his logical investigations, -far more definitely than Frege had tried to some years earlier. Husserl now establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. The work is the starting point for mereology, the formal first order theory of wholes and their parts. Mereology is both an application of predicate logic and a branch of formal ontology.Husserl is now famous as the father of phenomenology, and he decisively influenced the likes of Heidegger, Sartre, Carnap, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Ricoeur, Derrida etc. etc.

The scarce first edition of this interesting book on games of chance and the theory of probability connected thereto. Huyn's profound study of the possible series and combinations within the mentioned games of cards, roulette, lotto, and various other chance- or hazard-games, is based on mathematical theories of statistics. Among other things Huyn, in the present work, shows that it is impossible to win in uneven games and that all attempts to speculate in these are wrong and prove to be false. As such, ""La Théorie de hazard"" provides us with an important early contribution to the analysis of chance games and a valuable work of very practical probability theory. The present work stands at the midst of a new scientific approach to games of hazard, which also directly influenced the art and manners of trick-games and tricksters. Apart from the mathematical approach to the subject, Huyn also thoroughly explains the rules of the games and even has observations on the moral aspect of them.The work is very rare and is only found in few copies in libraries world-wide, e.g. only two copies on OCLC. Another edition of the book appeared in 1803, printed in Amsterdam.

Hölder turned his attention first to simple groups. Besides the simple groups of orders 60 and 168 already known at the time, he found no new ones with a composite order less than 200. Nevertheless, he considered his method to be ""of some interest so long as we do not possess a better one suitable for handling the problem generally."" Such a general method is still lacking, despite the progress and great efforts of recent years. IBM was the leading manufacturer of the card sorting machine and the company was founded by Herman Hollerith on the basis of his 1901 Hollerith Automatic Horizontal Sorter.The two main requirements of the Card Sorting Machine were lowering of error risk and sorting speed. Both features were continuously improved which resulted in a number of different issue of the engineering manual.""The three machines necessary to perform the basic operations required in punched card accounting are the punch, the sorter, and the accounting machine. The punch establishes the records, the sorter arranges or classifies them, and the accounting machine produces the printed reports.""
