Summary Stanislaw Lubieniecki (1623-1675) was a Polish nobleman and adherent to the Unitarian religion. After his coreligionists were expelled from Poland and Lithuania in 1658, he settled in Hamburg and in the neighbouring town of Altona. When a comet appared in the sky in late 1664, Lubieniecki entered into correspondence with about forty astronomers, mathematicians and other scholars - Giovanni Battista Riccioli, Athanasius Kircher, Otto von Guericke, Erasmus Bartholin and Ismaël Boulliau, among others. Johannes Hevelius was one of the addressees of his letters, and their correspondence turned out to be long-lasting and abundant. In the years 1664-1673, they exchanged 92 letters (31 from Hevelius, 61 from Lubieniecki). This correspondence is the fourth most voluminous in the entire corpus of Hevelius's letters. Hevelius was a reputed astronomer, sometimes unwilling to share his observations and ideas, and Lubieniecki was an interested dilettante, striving to learn more about the comets of 1664 and 1665 and other astronomical phenomena as well as their significance. He wanted to collect as many accounts of contemporary and historical comets as possible, and he published them in his Theatrum cometicum. Even though at the same time Hevelius worked on his Cometographia, they both realized that their books touched upon different aspects of cometary studies: historical in the Theatrum cometicum and astronomical in Cometographia. This volume is a part of the edition of Johannes Hevelius's correspondence. The collection of letters, whose manuscripts are kept in the Library of the Paris Observatory, has not been published nor thoroughly studied yet. Beaucoup de ces planches sont en couleur lithographique. Une grande vue équatoriale dépliante des étoiles montre la Voie lactée et une autre plaque montre une comparaison des éruptions solaires. Une des illustrations les plus intéressantes est tirée de la carte de Mars de Schiaparelli sur la projection de Mercator montrant un curieux réseau de marques linéaires qui sillonnent la surface martienne et relient une zone sombre à une autre. Schiaparelli a appelé ces lignes canal et les a nommées d'après des rivières célèbres, à la fois fictives et réelles ; ce qui a déclenché la grande controverse sur le canal martien. Les belles illustrations de la lune sont basées sur les célèbres gravures de Nasmyth et Carpenter. On y trouve également des vues de Jupiter, Saturne, la Lune, les taches solaires, les éclipses et bien d'autres choses encore. This astronomical atlas contains 60 beautiful plates of the solar system and thematic maps of the world. Many of the plates are in full, lithographic color. A large fold out equatorial view of the stars shows the Milky way and another plate that shows a comparison of solar flares. One of the most interesting illustrations is taken from Schiaparelli's map of Mars on Mercator's projection showing a curious network of linear markings which crisscrossed the martian surface and joined one dark area to another. Schiaparelli called these lines canali and named them after famous rivers, both fitional and real; sparking the great martian canal controversy. The handsome illustrations of the moon are based on Nasmyth and Carpenter's famous prints. Also featured are views of Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, sunspots, eclipses and much more.

Rara e curiosa edizione italiana del 12 marzo 1836 di uno dei sei articoli sulle presunte scoperte lunari atribuite all'astronomo inglese John Herschel (1792-1871) già introdotte in Italia dall'astronomo, matematico fisico e politico Dominique Francois Jean Arago (1786-1853). Il contenuto di questo opuscolo finì al centro di un lungo dibattito definito in seguito "Great Moon Hoax" "La grande burla della Luna". Il giornalista americano John Locke decise di pubblicare una serie di articoli sul New York Post descrivendo le scoperte del celebre astronomo britannico Herschel che, con l'ausilio di un potente telescopio collegato a un proiettore alimentato a "idro-ossigeno", affermava di aver visto chiaramente la vita sulla luna: creature fantastiche, foreste, mari, giacimenti minerari. Locke nel suo articolo citava fonti scientifiche attendibili e le descrizioni sembravano cosi veritiere che in breve la notizia ebbe molta risonanza e circolò su numerose testate internazionali. Solo qualche anno dopo Locke ammise l'inganno. Negli stessi anni Edgar allan Poe pubblicò un articolo simile e accusò Locke di plagio. After some year Locke admitted the fraud. In the same years Edgar allan Poe published a similar article and accused Locke of plagiarism.
