‎L’ingéniosité d’André Couder s’appliqua non seulement à la réalisation de pièces et de combinaisons optiques de toutes sortes, mais aussi à la réduction des déformations des grands miroirs sous l’effet de la pesanteur. Il étudia les flexions mécaniques des tubes de lunettes et télescopes et tenta de rendre aussi parfait que possible l’intérieur de ceux-ci, notamment en créant des flux d’air stables par l’installation de ventilateurs à leur base. C’est lui qui modifia les objectifs de l’équatorial double utilisé par le groupe strasbourgeois (André Danjon, André Lallemand et Gilbert Rougier) lors de l’expédition d’éclipse à Poulo Condore (Indochine) en 1929. En 1933, c’est à l’objectif du grand réfracteur qu’il s’attaqua, améliorant considérablement son rendement. Il rédigea avec Danjon, devenu alors directeur de l’Observatoire de Strasbourg, l’ouvrage Lunettes et télescopes (1935) qui fut une référence pendant des décennies.
