‎Apres le sejour du pape Etienne II dans l'abbaye " royale " de Saint-Denis de 753 a 754, le culte liturgique des eglises des Gaules va prendre un tournant essentiel dans son histoire : la tradition liturgique romaine promue par la papaute et le souverain carolingien va rencontrer la vitalite spirituelle et litteraire de l'hagiographie franque, pour operer un veritable renouveau dans la celebration de l'Office Divin. Les basiliques " majeures " du royaume franc et leurs communautes de clercs, avec l'appui precieux du pouvoir royal, bientot imperial, seront les foyers de cette renaissance, plus particulierement dans un espace geographique quadrilateral, sis entre Aix-la-Chapelle, Reims, Metz, et Saint-Denis. Ainsi, la dedicace de la basilique de Saint-Denis par l'abbe Fulrad en 775, en presence de Charlemagne, ouvre symboliquement le renouveau liturgique pendant lequel d'innombrables historiae - consistant en des cycles d'antiennes et de repons extraits des recits narratifs hagiographiques - vont fonder a jamais des rituels specifiques, scellant dans la memoire collective par le chant liturgique communautaire le souvenir des premiers saints, martyrs puis confesseurs qui, au fil des siecles, ont construit peu a peu l'Eglise des Gaules? Cet elan spirituel, intellectuel et artistique, immortalise par les scribes et les notateurs dans les livres manuscrits, aboutit a une apogee jusqu'aux premieres decennies du XIe siecle, lorsqu'est achevee la redaction et la decoration des principaux libelli et recueils hagiographiques de la Province de Reims, rassemblant vitae, passiones, historiae ou offices et autres textes hagiographiques d'auteurs celebres tels Venance Fortunat, Alcuin, Hilduin de Saint-Denis, Hincmar, Milon, Hucbald ou d'autres restes anonymes, ce dans une magnificence eloquente : A l'abbaye de Sithiu ou Saint-Bertin, avec le scriptorium d'Odbert (986-1007), au Mons Hor ou Saint-Thierry, sous l'abbatiat d'Ayrard (972-985) ou encore a Nobiliacum ou Saint-Vaast d'Arras, lorsque le scribe et enlumineur Albertus, comme son contemporain Sawalo a Elnone (Saint-Amand), dispose les huit lettres d'or de son nom dans un tapis d'entrelacs dans le Liber miraculorum sancti Vedasti vers 1030? C'est cet intervalle de temps (775-1030), qui fixe le cadre et les limites temporelles de cet ouvrage, se presentant comme le pendant musicologique de l'ouvrage de Ritva Jonsson : Historia, Almqvist & Wiksell, Stockholm, 1968. Voici donc une etude detaillee des historiae, de leur contexte historique et hagiographique, des sources et de leur transmission, une analyse musicale des formes melodico-rythmiques suivi d'une synthese sur leur place et leur evolution dans l'histoire du chant liturgique romano-franc. S'ensuit une edition critique des textes tant litteraires que musicaux de plus de vingt offices, qui rend enfin accessible aux musicologues et musiciens, un materiel jusqu'a present inedit. ‎Dr. Johan Andreas der Mouw (1863-1919) was leraar klassieke talen en publicist op filosofisch gebied. Aan het eind van zijn leven ontwikkelde hij zich tot een productieve dichter, onder het pseudoniem Adwaita (Sanskriet voor Tweeheidsloos). Hij debuteerde in De Groene Amsterdammer. Zijn enige, zeer omvangrijke bundel ?Brahman? verscheen postuum, in twee paarse banden. ??k Ben Brahman. Maar we zitten zonder meid.? Een karakteristieke regel voor Johan Andreas der Mouw: hooggestemd en relativerend, geestig en diep serieus tegelijkertijd. Het sonnet, zijn favoriete vorm, was geknipt voor die tegenstelling: tussen de twee kwatrijnen en de twee terzinen hoort er immers een omslag plaats te vinden, zo?n tegenstelling is bij het sonnet een verplichting. ?Mijn taalorkest? noemde Der Mouw zijn materiaal; hij is het dan ook die de metrische versregel van het sonnet het muzikaalst weet te behandelen, vooral wat betreft de syncope, in de poezie antimetrie genoemd, die was geintroduceerd door Willem Kloos, maar die door Der Mouw in al haar betekenisondersteunende aspecten is verkend. ‎

Title-page re-hinged, affecting neither printing nor woodcut. First leaves with light dampstaining to lower blank margin, far from affecting text. Last portion of leaves with small single worm-holes, mostly marginal, but touching the woodcut at the end. Neat marginal annotations. All in all a very nice copy. Magnificently printed, with three pages with the terms of the Hebrew cantillation printed in red and black, nine pages of musical scores (printed from right to left), extensive use of distinctive Hebrew type, large title-woodcut, and Anshelm's magnificent, large woodcut Printer's device at the colophon (presumably by Anshelm himself, after Dürer). 83, (5) ff. ‎

‎Scarce first – and only edition – of this groundbreaking work in Jewish musical tradition, being the first work with printed Hebrew music - Reuchlin’s last work of Hebrew grammer, considered a masterpiece of Hebrew typography. Johannes Reuchlin (1455-1522), the important German humanist from the city of Pforzheim, might not be a famous name today, but he played a significant role in his time and was greatly admired by thinkers such as Erasmus, Münster and Melanchthon. He was known as the father of Christian Hebrew studies as well as for his controversial fight against the Dominicans and their attempt to confiscate and burn Jewish books in the early 16th century. Thus, he became a symbol of interreligious tolerance during a period of growing anti-Semitism in Germany. The “De Accentibus” contains a transcription of Hebrew cantillation for four voices. There are 9 pages of musical notes with Hebrew text for Tenor, Discantus, Altus, and Bassus, and the notes are to be read from right to left. Scholars believe the notation was provided by the eminent Christian Hebraist Johann Boschenstein (1472-1540). “In his last work of Hebrew grammar, De Accentibus... (1518), Reuchlin published the first example of notated Ashkenazi Torah cantillation, presenting thirty-four tropes set to four voices. Although this setting is often regarded as a misunderstanding of Jewish monophonic tradition, it gives us an insight to a phenomenon that goes beyond liturgical practice. This musical experiment was meant to serve Hebrew students in their learning of a long lost language among Christians. It combines Jewish and German musical traditions, but also two of Reuchlin's mystical passions: the secrets found in the Hebrew words and letters as proposed in the Kabbalah and the magical effect of harmonies and proportions of Phythagoreanism.” Adams: R:380.‎
