Envoyé en mission à Istamboul pour réorganiser les relations politiques et commerciales avec l'Orient, Nointel voyagea aussi à Chypre, en Syrie et à Jérusalem. Voyageait avec lui Antoine Galland, qui rapporta et traduisit le texte des "Mille et une nuits". — "Diplomate du Grand Siècle, Charles Marie Olier, marquis de Nointel, était connu pour son cabinet de curiosités. De 1670 à 1680, Nointel part en expédition et la mission du marquis de Nointel aux pays d’Orient, de 1670 à 1679, fut une splendide aventure qui frappa vivement l’imagination des contemporains. (...) De toutes nos ambassades en Turquie, c’est l’une des plus importantes et à coup sûr la plus pittoresque. En effet, Par sa façon de voir et de sentir, par sa manière d’écrire, Nointel se rattache aux genres divers qui avaient fleuri ou sévi dans la première moitié de son siècle. A Paris, où Nointel se plaisait beaucoup, il acquit la réputation de « l’homme le plus agréable du royaume », si bien que Louis XIV désira le connaître." (Introduction)

La prima del 1885 è un compendio di storia antica scritta da Emmanuel Van Den Berg. All'interno: Il mondo conosciuto dagli antichi, Monumenti dell'Egitto e dell'Assiria, La Bibbia, Geografia dei greci e romani, Vie commerciali degli antichi, L'Egitto, Assiria e Babilonia, Israeliti, Fenicia, Media e Persia, L'India antica ecc... Alcune illustrazioni all'interno. La seconda del 1892 sono una serie di lezioni di storia antica di Francesco Rossi ad uso delle scuole. La terza del 1883 è un compendio di storia orientale e greca scritto da Tommaso Sanesi. All'interno: Ebrei, Egitto, Fenici, Assiri e babilonesi, Impero Medio Persiano, Asisa Minore, Storia greca ecc... In buone condizioni. Copertina in mezza pelle coeva con titolo e decorazioni in oro al dorso in buone condizioni generali con lievi usure ai margini e dorso. Legatura in discrete condizioni con qualche lieve rottura. All'interno le pagine si presentano in buone condizioni con fioriture. Macchie. Angolo superiore destro del piatto anteriore mancante. Some illustrations inside. The second one of 1892 are a series of lessons of ancient history written by Francesco Rossi for the usage of schools. The third one of 1883 is a resuming of oriental and greek history written by Tommaso Sanesi. Inside: Jewish, Egypt, Assirians and babilonesi, Empire Medio Persian, Asisa Minore, Greek history etc... In good conditions. Half leather coeval cover with golden title and decorations in the spine in good general conditions slightly worn in the edges and spine. Binding in fair conditions with some slight crack. Inside pages are in good conditions with foxings. Stains. Right upper corner of front plate is missing.

Créée à Beyrouth dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle, l’Université Saint-Joseph reste l’oeuvre la plus prestigieuse de la mission jésuite de Syrie. Ce « phare spirituel de la Méditerranée », selon l’expression de Maurice Barrès, symbolise à la fois son rayonnement, la présence française au Levant, et les rivalités entre les puissances occidentales au Proche-Orient. Cet ouvrage retrace la genèse de cet établissement en étudiant le développement de la mission jésuite au Mont-Liban puis en Syrie dans une période troublée, celle de la Question d’Orient, marquée notamment par l’occupation égyptienne et les massacres de 1860. De plus en plus nombreux, soutenus par la France impériale, les religieux de la Compagnie de Jésus ne cherchent pas à convertir les musulmans et se consacrent surtout à l’instruction, religieuse et profane, des catholiques orientaux. Leur action s’inscrit ainsi dans l’histoire des différentes Églises chrétiennes du Proche-Orient et plus généralement dans celle de l’empire ottoman.
