‎Ouvrage en très bon état. 1955. Claude Lorius répond à une petite annonce et part avec deux compagnons pour un hivernage d'un an en Antarctique, sans possibilité de retour, ni d'assistance. Cette expérience change sa vie. Sur ces terres vierges de toute expérimentation, le jeune homme réalise que chaque bulle d'air enserrée par les glaces des pôles est un échantillon de l'atmosphère de l'époque où elle fut emprisonnée. Autrement dit, à une profondeur de quelques mètres, la glace contient l'air que respiraient les Romains. La découverte est capitale. Elle amène à prouver que les hommes, par leurs activités, modifient la composition de l'atmosphère et réchauffent le climat. Pendant quarante ans, il a mené de nombreuses expéditions scientifiques polaires qui l'ont entraîné dans des conditions critiques ; en pleine guerre froide, il a su dépasser les conflits entre puissances politiques. Claude Lorius est un héros comme il y en a peu, qui a ouvert la voie et montré l'exemple. Dans une seconde partie du livre, Gilles Ramstein, paléoclimatologue, et Jérôme Chappellaz, glaciologue, racontent l'histoire de notre planète, de sa naissance à nos jours, afin de mieux comprendre le subtil équilibre dont nous dépendons. Aujourd'hui, nous sommes à un tournant... dont l'issue est entre nos mains. Les recherches se poursuivent et l'aventure scientifique et humaine continue.‎
