Chater, consisting mostly of oil paintings, water-colours, sketches, prints, most of which are based on landscape scenes of the South China Treaty ports in the 18th and 19th centuries and on British activities in China. The collection was partly destroyed during WWII. The remaining paintings are now in Hong Kong Museum.

Sa dynamique locale, la proximité de Hong Kong et le soutien de Pékin dans les années 1980 lui ont permis de se développer plus rapidement que toutes les autres régions côtières. Dans l'orbite de Hong Kong, le delta de la rivière des Perles est aujourd'hui devenu l'un des principaux pôles économiques de l'Asie orientale, et il est appelé à être le cinquième dragon asiatique du siècle prochain. Différents types de développement économique et social apparaissent ici suivant les sous-ensembles deltaïques : une industrie rurale prépondérante dans les districts centraux, un fort rôle des joint-ventures dans les Zones économiques spéciales de Shenzhen et Zhuhai, et un secteur privé grandissant.
