Following this, Artur Barrio will visit several other European museums with a substantial Beuys collection where he will be able to continue his 'imaginary dialogue'. // The work of the Brazilian artist Artur Barrio (b. 1945, Portugal) consists mainly of 'situations' or temporary synaesthetic installations made of perishable, fragile and organic materials such as coffee, bread, urine, charcoal, wine, cloth, texts and so on. The ephemeral character of Barrio's installations compels the artist to seek alternative documentary techniques: photo, film, the artist's book, etc. In this respect, as well as in his approach to material and what is known as the 'didactic' mission, there are similarities in his work, in content and form, to that of Joseph Beuys (b. 1921 Krefeld - d. 1986 Dusseldorf). Het efemere karakter van Barrio's installaties verplichten de kunstenaar te zoeken naar alternatieve documentatietechnieken: foto, film, kunstenaarsboek,... In dit aspect en tevens in zijn omgang met materiaal en wat men de 'didactische' missie kan noemen zijn inhoudelijke en vormelijke affiniteiten vast te stellen met het werk van Joseph Beuys (?1921 Krefeld - ?1986 D?sseldorf). ‎Roelant Savery (1578-1639) behoorde tot de grote groep Vlaamse kunstenaars die omstreeks 1600, tijdens de 80-jarige Oorlog, in de Noordelijke Nederlanden terecht zijn gekomen. Daar stonden zij aan de wieg van de grote bloei van de kunst in de zeventiende eeuw. Savery was een zeer veelzijdige tekenaar n schilder, gespecialiseerd in landschappen, dierstukken en bloemstillevens. Met encyclopedische precisie beeldde hij talloze verschillende soorten af: dieren, bloemen maar ook mensen uit diverse contreien, van Boheemse boeren tot joodse gelovigen in de synagoge. Savery werd d schilder van de uitgestorven dodo uit Mauritius. Meer dan tien jaar werkte Savery in dienst van de Habsburgse keizer Rudolf II in Praag, die hem op pad stuurde om de landschappen en mensen van zijn rijk vast te leggen. Afkomstig uit de Lage Landen moeten de watervallen in de Alpen diepe indruk hebben gemaakt op de kunstenaar. Na terugkeer in Nederland vestigde Roelant Savery zich in Utrecht, waar hij achter zijn huis een tuin aanlegde met kostbare bloemen en planten. Zo hoefde hij niet van huis te gaan om inspiratie op te doen voor zijn bloemstillevens.‎

‎Het werd uiteindelijk een boek met 700 onuitgegeven foto's, opgevat als een wandeling vanuit het meest verstedelijkte gebied Flora tot aan de grenzen van de deelgemeenten. Hierbij werden zoveel mogelijk foto's van een korte commentaar voorzien en kregen een hoop thema's geschiedkundige duiding. Katrien Arnaut: "Hierbij kon ik ook een beroep doen op de nota's van twee Merelbekenaars die intussen hun eigen biografie schreven: oud-bakkersvrouw Jenny Van der Heyden en Marcel Wauters. Zij maken dat je met het boek gerust een hele tijd zoet bent." Merelbeke Terugblik brengt unieke beelden van het vroegere Sperrenbos, dat tot in Gontrode reikte en waar Gentenaars in het weekend kwamen verpozen, den Berg, de vele bloemisterijen en kasteeltjes, de ambachten, scheepswerven, steenbakkers, boeren. De straatventers ook, of de tram, die later kort door een gyrobus werd vervangen. Het toont vooral de gewone man in zijn gewone bezigheden, die op zijn manier geschiedenis schreef. Voor wie ook maar een beetje in het verleden van zijn voorouders geinteresseerd is, vormt het boek echt een hebbeding. Nieuw.‎
