10 – Neel DOFF. Jours de famine et de détresse. Paris, Fasquelle, 1911.

Bendt Eyckermans (b. 1994) is a young Belgian painter who paints everyday scenes from his own life. However, in the process of painting, he transforms reality into a very personal language: figures, landscapes and objects turn into an almost sculptural parallel world. The book Posture Editions will publish, unfolds like an artichoke. As the heart of the book consists of a series of reproductions of the paintings, the reader has to peel off fragments of text and fragments of the painting's details to reach it. This layered approach seeks to highlight the depth in the artist?s works. The combination of pages with large, sharp details, pages with entire paintings, the sketchbooks and gouaches guides the reader into Eyckermans?s bizarre, but also recognizable world.

Painting after Painting explores the dynamic and evolving landscape of contemporary painting in Belgium, reflecting on its complex history and diverse practices. Published alongside the eponymous exhibition at the S.M.A.K. Museum in Ghent, this exciting title presents the works of 75 artists, from the late 90s to today, including figures such as K, Kati Heck, and Ben Sledsens. Highlighting the vibrant dialogue between emerging talents and their predecessors, the catalog showcases how contemporary artists navigate identity, history, and social contexts. By questioning artistic boundaries and celebrating the ongoing reinvention of the medium, Painting after Painting affirms painting?s enduring relevance in an ever-changing world.

First monograph on this Belgian artist. In his work, Vincent Geyskens examines the position of painting in contemporary society. Abstraction, figuration, a variety of media and styles of painting are engaged with as he probes their possibilities and limits. For an artist, painting is a way of turning thoughts into something tangible, translating them into substance. The exhibition at M will place the spotlight on the breadth of his experience and will gather together diverse series and types of work produced over the course of his oeuvre. The focus will be on his output during the past ten years, complemented by a number of older reference works. The exhibition forges links between various approaches and gives voice to his quest as a painter for the status of the image and visual representation in the present day. M is displaying not only collages, sketches, and painted series of frames, but also paintings that range from still lifes and portraits to abstract colour compositions with thickly applied paint. The publication will also zoom in on his practical work over the past ten years, bringing together various series in free-ranging connection with one another. Dominic van den Boogerd has written an explanatory article on his recent work, while Eva Wittocx has interviewed the artist about his choices and thought processes. The book is amply illustrated. AUTHORS: Dominic van den Boogerd (1959, Breda) is an art critic based in Amsterdam.
