S.M.A.K. presents the first major retrospective of the Belgian video artist Koen Theys ( 1963, Brussels). Theys was one of the founding fathers of the Belgian video art scene since the early eighties and stood at the cradle of the discourse around video art in Belgium and by extension throughout Europe. In his work Theys combines a thorough substantive and formal research on video art as a medium, with a very expressive - referring to a baroque aesthetic - imagery, often combined with references to the European and Belgian cultural and political history. Dirk Wynants (? 1964) is de oprichter en eigenaar van het vernieuwende Belgische meubelmerk Extremis. Hij is tegelijk de belangrijkste ontwerper van het merk en de bedenker van het briljante branding concept "Tools for Togetherness". As a son of a cabinet maker, Dirk Wynants (? 1964), was brought up with a nose for good design and a healthy dose of entrepreneurship. He studied interior and furniture design at Sint-Lucas School for Architecture in Ghent (Belgium) and was involved in the distribution of international design brands, until he established Extremis (1994), a label and brand for his own designs. Extremis' outdoor furniture designs quickly grew into an international standard of excellence. Not only the design collection itself has been applauded and awarded many times (with several Henry van de Velde Awards, Interior Innovation Award, (IMM Koln 2005), Red Dot Award 2005, International Excellence Design Award 2007, ao.), the expertise of Extremis in the field of design management, general management and export was praised just as well. In 2007 the creative unit of Extremis continued under the name Dirk Wynants Design Works = (dw)?, to enable the company to take on external design tasks. Dirk Wynants is still managing director and main designer of Extremis, but is also working closely together with other internationally renowned designers.

The Bruegel Success Story. This small phrase evokes the brand invented by the great Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/7-69), which was capitalised on by his two sons and many followers. It was the natural theme for a symposium that brought together art historians, scientists and connoisseurs to celebrate the art of Pieter Bruegel and his indelible influence on the generations that followed. The idea for The Bruegel Success Story Colloquium took root at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Brussels, where Bruegel's most enigmatic painting, the Dulle Griet, was being restored in preparation for the great Bruegel exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in 2018-19. When is a work of art finished, done, terminated? In this essay, Christophe Van Gerrewey suggests that the incompleteness of art mirrors the un de-cidability of the world, about which the last word hasn't been said yet either. An artwork can be unfinished in seven ways: it is completed by the audience, it suggests a better world, the artist can't leave it behind, it is a collective process, it reflects modesty, it is too utopian (for the time being), or its value has yet to be discovered. The photographs of ateliers and studios that illustrate this essay, show the places where all these thoughts and con-siderations can originate. Van Gerrewey's philosophical essay is enriched in this issue with a photo section. For this image sec-tion, Katrien Daemers photographed fifteen studios of contemporary artists, leaving the artist absent but allowing the (un)completed work to speak all the more.
